Multi Use Salons

Sunsally recently used the term multi-use salons on another thread and it occurred to me that it might be an interesting discussion to talk about that issue.

We have seen an evolution of video/tanning, check cashing/tanning, nail/tanning, spa/tanning, fitness/tanning, tanning only, etc. Maybe it's time to return to a multi-use model like days past.

Thoughts?

Well, maybe so...offset the Jason months with a business that thrives opposite this? Personally I enjoy the off season.

But complimenting sort of business.

A couple of my comps have jet ski rentals...another has power-wash business, another has a bar...

I have a hair and nail salon in the same 6000sq ft building, that makes me my etched in stone monthly income.

It is all about your market as to how you can combine businesses.

A business for example that is a hair salon & a tanning salon can do well as long as you do not have to walk through the hair salon to get to the tanning. They can share a lobby but the businesses must be separated. By doing this the tanning portion is still viewed as a full service salon. Also the businesses will do better if they have separate names. Sally's hair and tanning will not do as well as Sally's hair Sally's tanning. They can share marketing efforts but Sally's tanning will not be mistaken for a hair salon that has a few beds. It is all about perception.
If in fact it is a hair salon that has a few beds you will draw primarily from your hair clients, because it is operated as a secondary business.

The most successful combined businesses are both operated as primary businesses. This would be true if it is a laundromat, fitness center, bar etc.

We actually have a cell phone business in the tanning business. It's a very strange combo, but it tends to compliment nicely. Cell phone customers come in and notice that we have tanning beds, and they end up becoming a regular for both their phone and tanning needs. The same happens in reverse, too.
