Question Dryer sheets and acrylics...

Is it okay to use dryer sheets in with the towels that are used to clean the beds? One of my employees insists they leave a film on the acrylics and harm them and I have never seen evidence of this. Just wondering what the consensus is on this. I like the dryer sheets as it makes our towels softer for the clients and also keeps the static out of them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I've never had any issues , but we only use 1 sheet p/load. I'd be curious to hear of anyone else having problems too.

Re: Dryer sheets and acrylics...

Your employee is CORRECT. She deserves a raise and a promotion.

Dryer sheets have a mixture of chemicals consisting of hydrophobic agents which helps keep stains off the fabric, also helps fabric from being static /cling free. Over time, excessive use of dryer sheets (all brands), makes the towels less absorbent as the strength of the fibers are diminished

Not harmful to living creatures, but yes, can leave a residue on acrylics..
Dryer sheets also leave an invisible residue on the inside of the dryer tub and the lint screen. It is wise to rinse the lint screen once a week under water to keep screen from clogging.

A liquid softener used during a rinse cycle may be a better alternative. Or some vinegar in the rinse cycle, or baking soda are two 'green' methods.

Good to know, thanx Black Sun. I use the vinegar & baking soda on my home towels when they get nappy, but never thought about it @ the salon. Although, usually the salon towels wear out before they get nappy.

I tried those dryer prickly balls for a while, but they tore 'em up quick.

Liquid softener might make them less absorbent after a while.

Re: Dryer sheets and acrylics...

We don't use sheets or the liquid. Static doesn't seem to be a problem and the towels that have never been washed with softener have a notably longer life. No unraveling or fraying at all.

Re: Dryer sheets and acrylics...

I use the blue microfiber towels to clean our beds (from Heartland). Label on the towels says no fabric softner or bleach. I would assume that includes dryer sheets.

Re: Dryer sheets and acrylics...

We have really low dew points here, which makes it excessively dry for about 9 months of the year. So unfortunately, mad static

Re: Dryer sheets and acrylics...

Dryer sheets use an oily substance to do their job of softening and reducing static. Try wiping down clean chrome or glass with two diiferent towels. One that has been dried with and one without a dryer sheet. The residue will be obvious. I am not sure if this stuff is good or bad for the acrilic. But I agree the employee is right on the Money.
