If you had to do it all over again, could you?

If you were wiped out and had to start all over again in the tanning business from today, would you be able to? Many top business leaders today say that because of the laws and regulations and expense of opening a business that it would be impossible to do what they did (ie Microsoft, Home depot) Keep in mind how you started the first time.
That really is the true measure of the state of our industry

Crazy question. But my answer is truthfully at my age I would not be so willing to take the financial risk. When you are younger risk seems easier.

**** no! If I were wiped out, I would simply gut my salon and rent out the space and live happily ever after. I question myself, what am I waiting for?
Answer? 2 more years or college for my son to pay for. Then...the gut.

Uhm, starting in 1988 was cheap. First 3 beds were Sunal facial equipped beds out of the back of a semi trailer. Build out was 6 rooms.

I started fresh too. I did the build out. Started with the 3 beds and a used hex brand stand up. Within a month or 2 added 2 new pure tan beds, then thruout the years grew and grew that 6 bed salon to 16 before being maxed out and then buying a 6000 sq ft building we are still in. Started with 28 rooms in the new building from 1994 til complete gut and remodel in 2003 to 23 rooms now.

You worked alot harder than I. I owned a 4 story hotel and was not using the rooms on the first floor. AC and 220 already there.

My first in 1998 cost $250k (units included)
4,500 sq/ft, started with 12 units

It would run about $500k today

Regulations would be no problem, Indiana has had the same regs for years.

Re: If you had to do it all over again, could you?

It would be hard to start over in most competitive environments with a bunch of old Sunals and Sundashes. The only thing that you would have going for you is the industry knowledge-you know the shortcuts, where to buy things and do things that you did not know how to do and had to learn the hard way when you first began.

I guess the key issue would be could you motivate yourself to do it again?
