How to hire an All Star?

What past experience, and what are the key factors you need to know about a prospective sales consultant to increase your probability of hiring an all star as opposed to someone who interviews well then either can't sell anything or is lazy? Are there any interview questions or clues you've learned over the years to help you hire better staff?

Re: How to hire an All Star?

If they pass the interview phase we set them up to do a 4-5 hour shadow shift...to include cleaning. This is a tremendous weed out phase...some will not schedule it...some will schedule and not show, others will show and change their mind about the job...some will ask to stay longer.

My shadow shift trainers are hardcore...no socializing....they have them clean well...even have them do one restroom....just for the reaction..and it says a lot. And your team gets a feel for them.
Having that 4-5 hours is a perfect amount of time to gauge the person.
Some want to come plop in the front desk chair, some lean against the wall and drool....but we watch for the ones that keep leaning forward and jump on cleaning beds before anyone asks, and engages customers with hellos and goodbyes. You get a bit more time for that personality to show itself. This was taught years ago in Nashville. If they make this phase they are your hires.
You can pay them or we will trade them out with tanning or a lotion. Thankfully we stopped ourselves from making bad hires many times using this 2 tier interview.

Re: How to hire an All Star?

Set up about 5-10 chairs in one room and have the person sit in that room, then go in and state that you need to move these chairs to another area in the salon and you will be with them right after that. If while you are moving the extra chairs in the room, they do not offer to help… no job, interview over.

The Cheeseburger question:
A customer walks into the salon and puts down 2 one hundred dollar bills and asks for a cheeseburger, what do you do? If you want to understand my logic on this one; read Tony Hsieh’s book, Delivering Happiness. ISBN: 0-446-56304-8

DiSK test everyone when you are down to 3 potential new hires to find the best choice.

#1 tip: Hire slow, fire fast

We have a 5 page questionnaire + the application, 4-5 interviews, and a personality test. We make it very hard to get a job here for a reason.

Re: How to hire an All Star?

$8
$8.50 @ 30 days + Perks
$9 @ 90 days +Perks +Bonus
Varies from there

If you are wondering how someone handles 4-6 weeks of effort to get a job slightly above Min. wage; well... most quit about half way through.

sometimes you just have to get a little lucky I think I've hired people that I thought weren't going to be so great and they turned out to be amazing and I've hired people slowly but surely become very lazy
