Rep Power: 22 | Under 17 Ban Approved by NJ Senate. TRENTON — Most New Jersey teenagers would be banned from using indoor tanning beds under legislation that cleared the Senate on Thursday afternoon. State law forbids the use of tanning beds by children under age 14 and requires written parental consent for those 14 to 17. The measure approved by the Senate extends the age of the outright ban up to 16, but allows 17-year-olds to use beds at tanning salons if a parent consents in person. The bill also bans children under 14 from spray tanning at salons and requires parental consent for those 14 to 17. The Senate voted 32-0 to approve the bill, returning it to the Assembly, which voted to approve the ban last May before the measure was amended to allow 17-year-olds to use tanning beds if a parent was present. The American Cancer Society has campaigned across the country for a complete ban on all juvenile tanning because of the increased cancer risk that tanning causes. The organization frequently has cited a 2009 survey that found that 15 percent of high school students nationwide used indoor tanning devices during the past year, with about half of them reporting they tanned 10 or more times. California and Vermont are the only states that have outright bans on tanning for children under 18. A total of 33 states regulate the use of tanning facilities by minors. The Indoor Tanning Association has said that New Jersey's law requiring parental consent already is tough and that extending the outright ban will hurt small businesses. The bill to toughen New Jersey’s restrictions was introduced in January 2012, but it received additional attention in May, when 44-year-old Nutley resident Patricia Krentcil was charged with child endangerment after allegedly taking her 6-year-old daughter into a tanning booth with her. |

Rep Power: 25 | Re: Under 17 Ban Approved by NJ Senate. This means salons will have to "reach out" to their 18+ customers. These customers typically have more disposable income - and less time. Higher end units are more appealing where they may pay more for a visit, but don't have to come as often. High Pressure, teeth whitening, red light, spray, infrared wraps --- all should be considered/explored. |

Rep Power: 17 | Re: Under 17 Ban Approved by NJ Senate. Yep and as a parent it irks the **** out of me. I cant stand the fact that the government can tell me that my kid can't tan before a vacation, so instead they will burn to crisp on the beach right. It is ridiculous. But lets start legalizing weed. Something is so backwards in this society. |
