Rep Power: 0 | The Right Employee ?? I own a small slaon and i just had a baby on 11/14 our employee's all walked out the day i had the baby, needless to say (cash is also missing) anyway i'm working open to close 7 days a week with a newborn. My question is how do you find the right employee for your salon, what to do you look for, questions you ask. Any advice helps Thanks |

This allows you to have a better idea of their personalities, as people in interviews are always on their best behaviour, you don't get a fair and realistic range of their personalities, plus you should know what they know about tanning/lotions/etc. I also like to hire employees that are 19+, my best being 22-24 (tend to be more mature), try to avoid the party-girl persona also.. they generally are not very hard workers and will blow off shifts (we even had one come in to work drunk...) During the interview process we do individual interviews, me with my assistant manager and one candidate. I also tend to screen responses to job listings, did the person respond with an email like "cutebooty69@blahblah"? if so they are cut, if their resume is poorly done, cut. If they have sales experience good, if they have smart tan, even better. We ask fairly general questions, the idea is to get a vibe of the prospect and see if they would fit in the salon. We also do a mock sale, handing them a bottle of lotion or a stapler or a pen or something like that. Make sure they understand the job, I always make it very clear that they have to sell and they have to clean (a lot). After the hiring process... the new employee is on 3 months probation. We keep up on inventory counts during shifts so I know when something goes missing and who would be to blame. As well if you are worried about money theft try leaving an extra 10 in the till when a new employee is working and see if they fess up to being over or just pocket the money. I have caught a few that way. |

Agree that people that 'need' a job always work out better than someone that thinks working in a tanning salon would be 'so cool'. I like to ask about good and bad customer service or sales experiences to see if they are tuned into their interactions. Once you find them, make sure they feel appreciated. I loosely work throguh the FISH Philosophy- keeps them engaged. Commissions or bonuses help- I base them on their personal contributions. What made them all walk out at the same time? That might need to be addressed before bringing in new people.

Rep Power: 14 | Re: The Right Employee ?? How long have you been in biz, and how long were these 'employees'. I'd be more concerned and question why it got to this point... Why would everyone walk.... To do so, the day you had a baby, is almost like they are making a statement and this action was pre-meditated |

I really think its based on their maturity level & your management style. Theres more to this story to have ALL of your employees walk out on the same day. Good employee management usually results in employee loyalty. I like to hire at least one girl who is a senior in a close by high school who is very active in her school. They usually bring in TONS of clients. |

All I am saying is sometimes its good to restructure your policies, management, rules, ect. We have all done it at least once. It can never hurt to try new things, thats business 101. Ive never had an employee steal from me (more than letting a few friends tan here & there for free, which is fine with me since I see it as advertising) so I cant imagine what that must feel like especially having to restaff at the same time. |
