Question How Long Do I Keep Consumer Statements for?

I'm Switching from paper to software i know im still going to have to do consumer statements but what about the really old ones who haven't tanned with me in some cases years? How Long to i legally have to hang on to them for?

That's a good question. We've been in business, going on 7 years, and we still have all our client registration, from day 1. I would think that if you haven't been sued in the last five years, that you could throw those older then that, away. Just my thoughts.

Yea that's what I'm thinking Tax files and stuff like that i know you have to keep 3-5 years but having a mother in law that does taxes for a living she isn't even sure of how long i should keep them for haha

I would find out what the law says to do which I believe is based on how long they have to audit you. I'd say stash it for as long as you are open and then for a few years after you are out of the business. these days the IRS will beat you up over $70 in the name of making people pay their share (a crock of ****)
