We have 2 salons, one has like three beds and does nails, the other has maybe 5 beds and does tanning only. Our population is around 8200. I figure roughly around 800 are tanners(roughly 10%). Do u thnk there is enough to support a new salon that will have 12 beds, kontur, etc?

The thing I want to do is open with nice quality equipment that others don't have and most of all, provide a superior service to my clients. The two Places n town are very small and extremely outdated.

No way. 800 tanners split between 3 locations is a bit under 300 people per salon. 12 beds would be WAY too big in that area. There is no way you can survive on that kind of traffic

NO WAY!!!! Don't do it. You would start regretting a decision like that before you even opened a salon. It cost ALOT of money to get started. My electrical totalled $15,000 alone, for 9 beds. Keep reading on here and you will find more reasons to not open a tanning salon today. Negative press and tan banning will continue and tanners will decline. It will NEVER be the way it used to be, ever.
If anything, maybe the salon with the five beds will sell and you could put in better equipment. I would find a better way to spend my money though.

It depend on what you got to offer and how far apart the other salon are min 5 mile. First if you are to move in on the other salon you got to have the best or better equipment then other.
Second the prices got to be lower or better deal, what going to make them come to you.
Third, the mixture of equipment lay down stand up and spray booth and it got to be Versapa. I would not go for hand spray, to personal.
Forth how are you going to market the salon, how are you going to bring people in, what make you better then the rest you got to stand out.
The list can go on and on but it up to you to make it work, I know i am in an area that 9 salon within 2 mile from my salon, what make my salon better is that it unlimited and in collage town great equipment 5 laydown 1 High pressure and 6 stand up , and a spray booth top end 75.00 month unlimited and you can tan in any unit except the spray booth. 35.00 month for a tropical 41 lamps, I do from 100 to 175 a day. and have a great staft without them it nothing but a salon.
It a big chance but life is what you make it, so think before you do it, but if you do your all in......Joe

cheaper does not equal better...i hate that our industry thinks this way.

Also, how many people are in your area to split between 9 salons? He is wanting to open a 12 bed salon with very low numbers.

investing 200-500k would be a waste for these numbers. It would take a lifetime to get it back. Unless he wants to be like the average salon owner and work open to close for free forever.

My first salon invested 250-350,000 second 60,000 still paying for first. Now I get it have a good salon with good equipment and prices people can afford (same as cheap) and your on your way....sound easy ....ya right...
