Re: Best selling lotion price point

I find myself buying samples of the expensive stuff over a bottle.

I don't know how you people do it with the Internet. People won't pay $70 for a bottle here that they can get online for under $30 (I wouldn't either). Under $20 ProTan poop sells the best here. Lot of people coming in with Lemon Pledge too (aka, "Ocean Potion" from Wal-Mart).

Question: Are y'all charging the appropriate excise tax (based on the value of the tanning sessions) for that, or are you just skipping it?

Re: Best selling lotion price point

That's because you are probably the only person selling it.

You can do it 2 ways, carry the main stream product and have a war on price or carry unique and sell it based on quality.

I would start looking for the most unique products that you like and sell them for a reasonable mark up. Just cause you bought it for $5 doesn't mean it can't sell for $40+.

If no one has ever heard of it and it works well then sell it based on performance. I'd rather have $40 for a $5 bottle than $80 for a $25 bottle as people won't be as attached to a cheaper bottle. $80 and they milk it forever.

I have this problem too. I had 2 customers that bragged about how cheap their Walmart Lotion cost. I let them try some free samples of lotion I carry inhouse and they stopped buying from Walmart but still only bought the cheap $20 stuff from us. I'm trying to sell the lotions the way Din has described here and it has helped us alot to sell our lotions in the $50-$70 range (we don't carry anything higher because it just sits on the shelf collecting dust)but still a tough sell in this economy. Had another customer tell me she bought our $68 bottle of Snookie online for $30 - it's very frustrating I know!

Re: Best selling lotion price point

One of the most helpful things for us has been moving away from a lot of the products that come in larger bottles. It is amazing how much faster people are blowing through comparably priced high end lotions now.

For example, we have pretty hardcore customers who buy something in a larger bottle (13.5oz) the same time as they get a package and tan almost every day and it lasts through a monthly and then some. Give them another lotion around the same price point that is 7oz (for example Devoted Code, AG gilded, MRi intelligent line) and within 3 weeks they are coming back for more or buying packettes throughout the rest of the month.

I find this is a good way of encouraging people to renew as well, as they usually end up purchasing another expensive bottle that is still half full around the end of the month. If they are on the fence about renewing, you are still getting that extra revenue selling them packettes for the remainder of their package

I have one customer who uses all MR International intelligent line and Tanatomy. She can be a bit heavy handed on the lotion but every two weeks or so, that 7oz bottle is empty

I'm in the process of trying to clear out most of my larger bottles at the moment and moving towards all products that are no more than 10oz or so

Bottles in the $30 and lower price point that are over 8 oz are a big no no for me
