Memberships - Time commitment or not?

If you sell memberships, do you require a contract with a time commitment such as 6 months or a year before a member can cancel?

What I really want to hear about is what you experienced if you did require a time commitment and then switched to a no commitment model. Something like cancel anytime after the first draft. I think it's pretty obvious that by removing as many barriers to becoming a member the more you will sell and your customer service will improve.

The big question is did you lose revenue when you switched or did you gain enough new members to make up for the members who did not stay as long as they may have stayed prior to the change?

The industry is constantly evolving. When EFT first became popular a 12 month comitment was the norm. Over time that commitment started getting shorter. Because contracts are met with such negative response, no contract EFT memberships will gain the greater number of members.

I prefer the membership that can be canceled anytime after the first 30 days with a 30 day written notice. Provide a cancellation form. This also allows you to offer opportunities for a freeze option or alternate memberships.

I partially agree with what you are saying, but on the other hand, we justify a 6 month contract because the customer gets discounted rates for signing the contract. For example. 1 Mo. unlimited is 49.99, where a 6 month EFT is 29.99/mo.
We dont let the customer cancel because they made a 6 month commitment in order to get this price....
