Cool Minimum age to tan

Hey guys! I was wondering how old your youngest customers are both for spray tanning and uv tanning. I have a customer (who used to work at another salon) who wants to tan (uv) her 11 & 13 year old step sons. I'm not sure how I feel about this and haven't answered her one way or the other.

Re: Minimum age to tan

Check your regs
They could tan here if a parent brought them in each time.

Cool Re: Minimum age to tan

My daughter has been tanning since she was about 6 years old.
I would bring her to my salon before the summer started and let her get a nice tan BEFORE letting her go to the pool or play outdoors for any extended amount of time. She learned to tan responsibly and still does to this day. I cringe when I know parents are taking their children to the shore for a week and their philosophy is "I let them burn first and then they tan" They should put the "tan police" on the beach for all those real abusers! http://beachtanningsouthphilly.com

I cringe when I hear a parent will let a 6 year old tan in a tanning bed. Don't u think that is a little to young

Why?

It is now proven through several studies that you have less chance of almost all cancers, including skin cancer if you tan moderately.

Do you want these children to grow up and die from (breast cancer, cervical cancer, heart disease...) BTW: rhetorical question. Of course you don't. However this post is to make you think and educate yourself instead of perpetuating false ideas.

Also, many studies now are linking low vitamin D to immune system disorders, attention disorders, learning disorders and so much more in small children. I am sure you don’t support this either, but your (or anyone else’s miss-guided opinion) not wanting children to get sun (real or artificial) is a major link to the rise in these issues.

I agree completely.

Either you think indoor tanning is a controlled version of outside tanning - or you do not.

If you do NOT - in my opinion - this is not the business for you.

A supervised SLOW build-up of a base BEFORE being exposed to uncontrolled OUTSIDE rays is the BEST way to handle exposure for ANYone - adult or kid.

I would rather put a child in a tanning bed for a controlled exposure to UV light to get a base..........then slather their skin in sunscreen chemicals that will soak through their skin and enter their bloodstream and HOPE that a) keeps them from a sunburn and b) doesn't lead to them getting cancer from those chemicals down the road!

Do I think a 6 year old needs a tan for "vanity" reasons?? Nope - no more than I think they need to wear makeup, earrings, dye their hair or have plastic surgery "enhancements".

But a base tan to help prevent burning?

Absolutely.

Re: Minimum age to tan

That gives me a lot to think about!! I have allowed MY son (8) to tan in a tanning bed for 3-4 min when I bought the salon, because he was curious and I didn't feel it was a big deal. But that's my son, and I'm not going to sue myself. As far as I know there are no restrictions for age with parental consent in Arkansas. But it makes me nervous simply because I would most likely never walk into someone else's salon and ask if my child could tan. Maybe I should...lol

In general:

1. Check for state regulations - if any.

2. Have them sign a waiver form on behalf of their child - as ANY client entering your salon should do for themselves (in Ohio it is mandated - can go to the Ohio Board of Cosmetology site to get an idea of the language used if your state doesn't require)

3. Ages 11 & 13? Seem prime age for tanning to clear up acne, for indoor tanning to build Vit D for kids that spend too much time indoors playing video games, for kids getting ready for a trip or the spring when they will be outside on vacation or playing sports with heavy outdoor exposure.

In your SPECIFIC example - having WORKED at a salon before - it seems they may already know and believe about the positive benefits of UV exposure - not surprising to me.

Again, think through why it "feels" any different to you than parents who would take their kids on vacation to sunny spot, let them use a pool or beach in the summer, let them play outdoor sports, etc....

Consult the Smart Tan website for more information about the "faulty science" being spread around about indoor UV tanning. Just because people keep spreading the bad information around, doesn't make it any more correct..........

Good question - one others have as well I'm sure!

Re: Minimum age to tan

I'm sorry my opinion a 6 yr old has no business being in a tanning bed. I've been in the business 21 yrs. I'm surprised with sunsally. I don't care they r in a controlled environment the r just to young.

Re: Minimum age to tan

Again; Why?

What bad things could happen?

Do you know they put some newborn babies under UV light?

Why do you think it is wrong.

I personally do not tan anyone under 14 (UV or Spray) for cosmetic tanning. In the case of vacations, medical isssues or of the such, I will.

So why do you "cringe"?
