Rep Power: 30 | Re: Dan for Congress (WBEN) Democrats and Republican party officials spent much of Wednesday night making phone calls, fleshing out who they could put forth as a possible replacement for Cong. Chris Lee, once Gov. Andrew Cuomo declares a special election Lee abruptly resigned his seat in Congress Wednesday night, after the gossip website Gawker.com reported he sent a shirtless photo of himself to a woman who'd posted a personal ad on Craiglist . A state official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak on the issue told The Associated Press the congressman hadn't submitted his resignation to the New York secretary of state Wednesday evening. After he does, Gov. Andrew Cuomo could schedule a special election. Cuomo, a Democrat, had no comment Wednesday night. Erie County Republican Party Chairman Nick Langworthy-- a former Lee aide and campaign manager-- said the party will hold the seat. Langworthy says there are several worthy candidates, including NY state Senator George Maziarz, who was considered a possible candidate when Lee first ran in 2008, and Assemblywoman Jane Corwin. "I would gauge my interest as very high," Maziarz tells WBEN. Langworthy also mentions Assy. Jim Hayes of Amherst, Sen. Mike Ranzenhofer, and tanning salon mogul Dan Humiston, who ran against Lee in a 2008 primary. And while 50 percent of the district population is in Erie (30%) and Niagara (20%) Counties, Monroe County Exec. Maggie Brooks is also mentioned as a possible candidate. On the Democratic Party side, sources are floating the obvious names of County Clerk Kathy Hochul and County Comptroller Mark Poloncarz. "Obviously Hochul and Poloncarz would be excellent candidates," says Erie County Democratic Party Chair Len Lenihan. " We did have some contact with them last night and i thnk it's safe to say both of them are probaly thinking about it, but certainly not close to making a decision." Lenihan also says that Amherst Town Councilmember Mark Manna has "expressed some interest." Working Families Party and UAW official Sam WIlliams is also mentioned, after he almost ran in 2010, but was short on cash. |
