Refrigerating Tanning Solutions..

I know that some solutions suggest be refrigerated to extend it's effectiveness e.g. Norvell. Is it ok to refrigerate those that don't require refrigeration just because we know that doing so will contribute to the life spand and effectiveness?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Refrigerating Tanning Solutions..

How soon should one refrigerate, when purchased or when opened?

Thanks Brian for your response.

Re: Refrigerating Tanning Solutions..

In our experience from formulating a broad range DHA spray tanning solutions over 12 years, keeping the product refrigerated from the very beginning extends shelf life.

For the client, cold solution feels terrible when sprayed on, particularly up the spine. Let it warm up. You may want to keep enough for a few days needs at room temperature in a closed container and leave the rest refrigerated.

Depending on the formulation, refrigeration can cause a solution to thicken and this can impact how the formula sprays out of the gun. These solutions will generally go back to their original thickness once back to room temperature.

Dihydroxyacetone is an unstable molecule and over time it will deteriorate and slowly lose its tanning ability. Unfortunate but true. Additionally as DHA breaks down the pH of the solution drops and this can lead to unwanted changes in the cosmetic color and to product thickening.

Some suggestions
- Try to buy pretty fresh solution
- Don't overbuy. We recommend buying your needs for the next 4 months or so, maybe at the most 6 months needs, to ensure the best results for your clients.
- Storage - Keep solution away from high temperatures. Below 75 is good, refrigerated is better. Don't leave your solution in your car on summer day!
- Keep out of strong light. Using opaque containers is best.
- Put the cap back on the container after each use. This helps.

Good luck. If you need any additional help don't hesitate to connect with me.
