Re: Decorating ideas/websites??

The way I found my "colors" for the salon was by going to Menards/Home Depot/Lowe's and looking at the paint color chips. They have samples of coordinating colors as well. The colors I chose were inspired by a book of South Pacific scrapbook paper so you might want to go to a hobby shop/scrapbook shop to get inspired.

Re: Decorating ideas/websites??

A few tips when starting... Put yourself in your typical client's shoes and visualize yourself walking through the doors - what is your first impression? what impression do you want to make to this client or potential clients? are you creating a theme - coastal, relaxing, bright, modern, etc.? Give your client a destination (not just a store) if only for a few minutes. Flip through magazines & rip out any pictures of colors, themes, decor, style, etc. that you like. Start to create your salon's atmosphere and carry it throughout. SunQuest4me had good paint ideas & I believe either Lowe's or Home Depot have online resources for painting - where you can create your painted space online & get an idea of what it will look like. I always recommended to my clients to order larger paint swatches & tape them to the walls - especially if it was something bold. Wait a day or so, check different lighting, etc.

There are also great wall murals that create scenes - if you have wall space in your lobby. Seabrook Wallcoverings had some great ones or you can google wall murals for companies in your area.

Try to have a basic idea in your head before shopping. There are so many wonderful design ideas out there & it can get overwhelming. Measure for your art ahead of time so you know just what sizes you need & where to place... proportion is very important too (bad examples are art too high on a wall, too small on a big wall) and remember your light switches - they sometimes get in the way.

Nice paint tricks - apply darker color 3/4 of the way up with a complimentary lighter color above, a border/molding/stencil in between - or vice versa on the colors. Nowadays anything goes with paint. I had a client paint their moldings dark & their walls light - it's typically the reverse - and it looked sensational!

Greenery is good too. A few potted trees & shelf plants of good quality scattered about suggest life & growth. Also can tie into whatever theme you choose as there are many varieties of plants available now.

I'm not sure what stores are in your area, but there are so many wonderful do-it-yourself home good stores now and reasonable too...

Most salons offer leather seating... a comfy couch & a few chairs. The style will depend on your theme but obviously the darker, the better & check durability and ease of clean. And you can 'tape out' a furniture floor plan so you know exactly what sizes will fit, etc. for a great new look.

You mentioned bright - some hot colors out there now are bright fuschias, classic purples, grass greens, lipstick reds... check out pantone online for some color inspiration too. It would be fun to do a fuschia & lipstick red theme - a cool glamour girl, bold & chic. But if it's bold beachy you want, try a hot turquoise & bright sea blue combo. Animal prints are still in (yippee!) and just about mix in with any theme.

Hope this helps... and of course, if you have any other questions - please feel free to ask! Have a great week : )

Re: Decorating ideas/websites??

I am redecorating my salon and am stumped with what I should do for the walls. i have open warehouse ceilings.. everything painted black. The problem I am having is that my floors are all tiled blue like the ocean. the previous owner had everything painted like a sunset orange that has been there for years.. i want something new, fresh, modern and clean. I painted the hall a light yellow.. and was thinking sand colored rooms with the wall behind all of the tanning beds some sort of glowing orange color. that way it brightens the room.. what do you think?

Re: Decorating ideas/websites??

Based on what you want (clean, modern, etc.), you could design a very cool environment playing off the blue tile floors. As long as it ties into your outside surroundings and building facade, etc., think about using complimentary shades of blue with creams or whites... then you can bring in a statement third color (black, fuscia, green, yellow). Then decorate around it with your accessories and upholstery goods.

If the blue tile color is strong (and it sounds as if it is based on orange walls previously), keep the paint colors strong to carry the theme throughout.

There are many design ideas and you have to also consider what your market is (what design would comfort & appeal to them)... walk into your salon as a customer & look around. What do you envision? Start collecting some paint chips, etc.

Happy Holidays! Hope this helps out : )

Good hues of bright reds and browns or any two shaded combination will look very good. I would suggest that you have a look at the online color center of California Paints. They have amazing colors and color palettes. They even offer suggestions on trendy colors and recent color trends. You can even check the e-visualizer and use it to actually see how your selected colors will look. They have some of the best rated interior paints.
