Bring Mobile Spray Tanning to Hair & Nail Salons?

Hey everyone,

I'm new to the forum and am starting up a mobile airbrush tanning business in Georgia. I thought it would be a good idea to talk to a few local hair salon and nail salon managers and see if they'd be interested in having me come in for a dedicated time slo (a few hours one a week or month) and they could advertise that they'll be having spray tanning appointments available for that day. Then the salon manager would get a percentage of what I make for that day.

Does anyone else do this? Is it a good idea, or even possible? Any other thoughts?

Thanks so much!
Nicole

I am new to the business and plan on doing the same myself. I have not done it yet but I think that its a great idea. I would have them book the appointments at the salon in advance so that you knew you had some guaranteed business. That way if not enough people book appointments you dont have to follow thru but I am sure that plenty of people will sign up.

It is a great business idea! Salons typically rent you a space as an independent contractor or some may accept a commission for use of their space...

Have a great week : )

Glow Mobile. Let me give you the insight from a salon owner. Not meaning to sound harsh, but really no other way to say it.

I've said it before...Our job in our salons is to keep the lights turned on. WHY..should we do all the work, marketing, carry ALL the overhead and round up business for YOU? Your $9.00 or $10.00 a spray tan that I get from you is peanuts when it comes to my overhead.

What do YOU bring to the table?

If someone came to me with that proposal of "You call me when you get me business" I would die laughing. You really need to knock my socks off and tell me what you are going to do to increase my existing revenue and getting new customers walking through my door. I have already worked, marketed and paid for the existing customers I have to help you get started...so what are you going to do for me?

There are posts on here about approaching a business that you should look at that I think will get in you the front door much better.

Best Wishes.

While I totally agree on not being ok with you wanting to show up if there are enough appointments (that is not acceptable), I do think it has merit.

We are in the process of looking at bringing someone in to do exactly what you are talking about. Being a salon owner I like the fact that you would be an independent contractor, I don't have to purchase the equipment, train someone, pay them to be there to try this out.

That being said, I would definately not bring you in to start your business, I would want someone who is already a pro at spraying and managing your own business. I want someone who is going to be professional, know what it means to your reputation if you don't show up.

Take the leap, I think this will be a good business in light of the constant pressure on UV tanning for some time to come. Get started learn the ropes, make your mistakes, build a base and become a pro at air brushing and I think you will find more than one salon willing to let you come in and make them some money. Once it grows big enough at the salon they may cut you out though so make it worth their while.

Re: Bring Mobile Spray Tanning to Hair & Nail Salons?

I rented a room for sprayers and I went through a total of 4 sprayers. My money came in each month with rent from them and they kept anything above that. What I found in all 4 cases was this...

1. All the business they were getting were my current customers I had earned in over 13 years...so they had a great start with my help.

2. They had NO motivation at all to market themselves and drive in additional business for me and themselves.

3. Instead of being there in the spare time and doing marketing, mailers, walking around to other businesses, meeting and greeting new customers or making calls....they would come ONLY when they were scheduled customers by us.

3. All started out great and then came the days of canceling clients, blocking off 3-4 days a week on their schedules AND the worst thing to me...showing up late when customers were waiting.

So after all that I decided I would never bring in someone and do it all myself. In 5 years I have built up to 10-12 spray tans a day at 5 days a week. So there are many reasons and things to do when there is not a client waiting to spray.
