What is your opinion of a good tan?

What is your opinion of a good tan?

There is so much discussion and so many views on what a good tan is but it has never really been defined. We always read or hear, "That bed tans good" or "those lamps tan good" or "that tan sucks".

But what makes a good or bad tan?

Is it getting as dark as possible? Changing ethnicities?

Is it the $h!t brown leather look that dictates that a bed is putting out the best tan?

Is it a mild coloring that just takes away that pasty look that if you weren't walking around then you might be mistaken as dead?

Is it that fire engine red painful look of the high B base bed?

What makes a good tan and what is the actual standard?

What should we be promoting to the public as a great tan?

What will it take to change the perception of what a tan is to the public and get a lot more people through the door?

Should we be promoting moderation yet continue to offer the unlimited tan that encourages abuse?

Let's discuss this in more depth. There seems to be absolutely no standard and too many varying opinions on this.

Thoughts?

I think there is a "healthy glow" and then there is over doing it.

This is a tricky question as there are many skin types & each will get slightly different end results. I'm blonde, blue eyes, & Irish so tan to me might be pale to a skin type 3.

I think it is important to have employees of salons have that "healthy glow". Sometimes the girls behind the counter look nasty, if it's from too much UV or a sunless tan on top of it. Looks like they are trying to get as dark as possible.

With those going to Nashville you see the owners walking around that look purple because they wanted to get as dark as they can before the show, just looks nasty.

Re: What is your opinion of a good tan?

For me and what I try to teach my clients....

A healthy glow is the point were you have color, but not look like you've been tanning. A point where your skin tone looks "Natural".

As far as beds, IMO a bed that can give color quickly with comfort, and is easy for clients to use, is what makes a good bed.

Someone had said here or on another forum (I think it was Jeff) that people wanting to get vit D from tanning, but not look tan, is something interesting to me. The idea of running higher UVB lamps, and limit time to only 5 mins per session, might be something worth toying with.

Re: What is your opinion of a good tan?

I will burn if not careful but I will also develop a nice tan- a mild healthy glow is my goal.

Trying to impose this idea on clients is sometimes hard. Especially this time of the year, when a lot of the clients you are seeing are die hard, year round, can't be dark enough.

Navigatin1- I like Jeff's idea, but how would you advertise a Vitamin D package w/o advertising health benefits?

Re: What is your opinion of a good tan?

"my" idea of a "good tan" is one produced by a HP unit (with low UVB) all over your body while using a salon quality tanning lotion. thats really a "smart tan" (least damaging)
now, another "good tan" could be from a base bed as well, while going 2-3 times a week, again using a high quality salon sold tanning lotion. "good tan" is not reddening that turns to nice color....its the gradual appearance and building of tanning in moderation without burning and always using a salon quality tanning lotion while tanning.
now, about unlimited's...i do agree they are sold on the premace of tanning your azz off...like a restaurants dinner buffet...but it can also be sold with the education of; it allows you to come in as often as your skin needs to build a base tan...like every other day to get started...and then determining how many visits a week you need to maintain this "good tan" of course while using a nice tanning lotion...in our salon unlimiteds only allow you base beds but also give you the opportunity to try and use upgraded units at a surchage extra each time. we do not have unlimited's thats include any upgrades. (always a surchage extra) i know this surcharge extra, slows down tanning clients from over-using select units. another thing that slows down use on base beds while having unlimited's is the "amount of" you have. at one time i had 28 units...22 base beds, 2 stand ups and 4 - 36 lamp non facial beds to upgrade into. those were the days of high volume!! now, we have just 16 units. rooms have been deleted and made larger...allowing us to have just 6 base beds, 2 stand ups, a mystic, and the rest, all upgrades. we are using unlimited plans to be competitive in the market and make up for it with the upgrade units. will be considering deleting 1 or 2 more base beds this season to create a "wait"...and/or upgrade senario.
thus, unlimited's can entice people to tan too much, but if set up properly...not.
wow, think i'll run to the salon today for my "good tan" which will be with a facial lotion,(surface) followed by some Code over top it for more color...Code on my body as well for that instant rush of darkness, followed up by the intense HP action of color from 20 minutes in my Sunboard Plus. ahh, so relaxing, and a "good tan" to boot. :) well, thats my recipe of an awesome tan actually!! no reddening, just nice brown color...that lasts for days! "deeper darker color that lasts"... thats a "good tan"

Re: What is your opinion of a good tan?

I'd say the ideal tan is one that looks natural for your skin type AND GEOGRAPHY.

For example, just because you're greek, doesn't mean you have to look like you live on the Mediterranean Sea in the dead of winter in Michigan.

If you're Irish, that doesn't mean you should look like you've been harvesting potatoes for 12 hours in the Arizona desert.

A good tan IMO is one that is acquired in a tanning salon, using a quality product (Type I and II, step away from the bronzer), for the purposes of producing Vitamin D.

So basically, regardless of skin type, if you're tanning for the health of it, that's a good tan.

Re: What is your opinion of a good tan?

Its something that cannot truly be debated because everyone tans different.

Some customers that tan very easily and achieve a dark deep tan in basic bed with fewer sessions compared to others.

Some customers need a VHR or even HP to get the same results

Some require a higher frequency in VHR's to achieve the same results as someone who tans very easily and builds dark color in a basic bed.

A "healthy" glow for a type 2 or 3 might be close to natural color for a type 4.

I have a hand full of customers that swear by the high UVB I run in my 10minute ovation. They have the nicest brown tan and experience very little redness, some customers just turn red from it and receive no browning.

So what is a good tan or healthy glow? Ask the customer, they know better than anyone.

Bronzers make tans look unhealthy IMO.A tanning bed regardless of how powerful will never make someone look unhealthy,no matter what the frequency.Only the sun or a combination of DHA will do that.

A good tan is looking back at pics of yourself prior to tanning and thinking god, did i really use to look that white.
