Rep Power: 24 | My run-in with the AAD and melinoma Foundation of New England Ok, so I took my wife and kids to Six Flags New England and it was "Melinoma awareness day". The AAD and the Melinoma Foundation had booths set up there. The AAD's booth had these light boxes that you stick your head in and check for skin damage under a black light. So I walk up to it, check myself out...NO DAMAGE AT ALL!! So when I pull my head out of the box, a lady at the booth asks me how I looked, and I said "No damage...not bad for someone who has owned tanning salons for 19 years!!" Well now everyone at the booth makes me stick my head back in so they can look at me under the lights...and again NOTHING!! They brought up the study and I explained what is listed on the ITA's sight. Come to find out, the girl in charge of the AAD's booth was in the "fitness industry" so I explained to her that I think the ONLY problem in the tanning industry is gyms (and some salons) that are not trained properly and do not know the correct way to tan a customer. She stated that the gym she had worked for had tanning and it was not monitored and the customer set their own time! They also had a poster up of a 20 yr old that started tanning at salons at age 17 and claimed salons gave her skin cancer...I asked the girl in charge if they had actual proof that the salon gave her cancer and it had nothing to do with her mom letting her fry while playing when she was younger?? NO COMMENT FROM THEM!! OH, and BTW...they had Ocean Potion SPF samples to give out too! I asked if they had anything to do with sponsoring the event or booth...AGAIN, NO COMMENT!!

I explained about the study and how it was baised (with people that are type 1 skin type) and about how red wine, beer, salted fish are in the same category as mustard gas too! I think she started to realize that there are 2 sides to every story!!

Rep Power: 21 | Re: My run-in with the AAD and melinoma Foundation of New England this is exactly the kind of thing salon owners should be doing when given the chance to combat the negatives that are spewed. Good for you Todd! Forgive me if this is being done..but maybe a post can be done as to what others are doing to spread the good word of tanning in their area or how they combat the negative press etc. |

They are just spouting out things they read and have no idea if it is true or not. I know you must have been proud. |

Rep Power: 24 | Re: My run-in with the AAD and melinoma Foundation of New England I'm 37 yrs old and started in the industry when my mother (who owned 2 salons at the time) broke her ankle and the managers of one of the salons quit! I worked 40 hours a week and commuted to UCONN. After I graduated, I bought the salon and have been diong this ever since (Jan 1990)! I tan regularly and have no skin damage...and the AAD tries hanging up posters of a 20 yr old that started tanning "for proms" at age 17 and say they got cancer from the tanning bed...guess it's easier to blame a salon that you do not know than say "My mom (and/or Dad) fried my a*s as a kid and they are responsible for what happened to me!!
