Nothing like a doctor to spread false info...

On Saturday I was out picking some stuff up for my salon when one of my employees called to say a customer had called an complained. Apparently this customer got some kind of rash while tanning at my salon and her doctor told her it was because the beds weren't being cleaned properly. The customer wasn't angry, she just wanted to make us aware of the situation. I had my employee check her history to see when she last tanned because I hadn't seen her in for awhile. She hasn't tanned since the middle of May...and she was just making us aware of this now?

Anyway, I talked to the customer on the phone yesterday just to clarify. My employee misunderstood, it wasn't a rash...it was a fungus. The customer couldn't remember what the doctor called it, but she was explaining it to me and the first thing that came to mind was tinea versicolor. The doctor told her that you can get TV from dirty beds! TV isn't even contagious! I explained this to her, but I'm not sure she believed me. I assured her regardless, we clean the beds after every customer and we use a clean rag for each bed.

Makes me so mad.

I've had this same thing happen a few times and have heard people come in to tan with me saying they won't go to ABC salon because they caught a fungus! I arm them up with literature, tell them the truth, and send them to the pharmacist in my plaza, who sets them straight as well. Either there isn't enough education for our doctors, or they just love to mess with us.

I had a customer come in today and say she caught ring worm from one of my beds. I am mortified, because we soak our beds cleaning them and I am a germifobe personally! I didn't even know what to say. Can this really be pin pointed to my beds? Has this happened to anyone here? We haven't had this issue before so I am feeling horrible, especially because my salon is known for being so clean and tidy!

You know...every time you step outside of your home you enter "germ warfare." Public toilets, hotel rooms, airline seats, elevator buttons, shopping cart handles, telephones, door handles, gyms, hair salon chairs and other people...but in our case we have a BIG target on our backside. We are an easy out for providers to diagnose in the guessing game of medical dermatology (I spent 21 years in Flight Medicine). God forbid the person caught it from their own unclean bathtub.
