When is the ideal time to start a tanning business?

I was thinking for opening a salon soon (by June 1st) but I was wondering if I should put this off and start early 2010 instead. I am afraid with all the competition in my area, that it would not be wise to do it now.

I have location, electrician, contractor, tanning bed quotes and everything in line but have not signed any agreement. Your honest opinions would be appreciated. Also, my husband has been in the business before so we know what we are up against.

It's all about cash flow.

If you have enough cash reserves to "pay" to be open for 6 months if you cannot (and you very well may not) make enough to cover the rent, payroll, utilities, lease payments etc.....then it really doesn't matter when you open.

If it has to cash flow itself from day one -- well then you probably shouldn't open at all, no matter what month.

Slow season is JASON (July-Nov). Doesn't mean you can't open then. Just means you'll have 50% of your yearly costs but maybe only 25% of your revenues.

We always like opening salons in the fall (Oct-Nov). This gives you a couple of months to iron out your systems befire season.

If you open in the Summer you probably have to keep it a float for the first six months.
