Rep Power: 0 | donation turned down I own a tanning salon in NJ and wanted to share a phone call I received last Friday with all of you. This is the first year we are doing a Breast Cancer Awareness promotion and donating $1,500 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. My manager had called the Summit branch in NJ to see if they had posters and miscellaneous stuff we could use to promote the cause in our salon. I received a phone call back from their rep on Friday and she proceeded to tell me and I quote "they could not be affiliated or sponsor us because the artificial UVR rays we sell are giving people cancer" as I tried to educate this woman she then told me "that we are lobbyists against tanning and support the state of New Jersey and we are both fighting for more tanning laws in this state” I almost fell off my chair about how uneducated a lobbyist could be...so our conversation ended like this, I said "so you are saying that we cannot use your foundations name and you do not want us to donate our money to you?" she then said "yea I’m sorry we cannot be associated with your salon and cannot take it, again I’m sorry" I just wanted people in our industry to know that they do not support tanning because I know a lot of salons give them money for breast cancer awareness, we are now donating to another foundation and I would hope you would do the same. |

Rep Power: 28 | Re: donation turned down Funny I just read this as I have a client in now that is lobbying for the ACS on Capitol Hill on my massage table as we speak. I'd tell them to go **** themselves, most of the big cancer organizations are for profit businesses and I would not donate to them. I'd sooner donate to a reputable university that does the research vs. the puppets in the ACS/Susan B Komen foundation.

Rep Power: 23 | Re: donation turned down They come begging me every year for donations. I am willing, but when they used our logo as a sponsor in the past, it turned negatively on us, as people just perceived it as wrong. Now if I donate, it is anonimously, for my own satisfaction. Probably an isolated instance with this particular person.

Komen for which we have been actively promoting these last few months. We have also be asked to participate as sponsors / contributors for other Breast Cancer events. I think you came accross a "bad egg". Good Luck. :-) |

Rep Power: 17 | Re: donation turned down I always donate to these local fundraisers, but i never donate cash. Most of them have silent auction with proceeds going to the foundation. I accumulate so much free or discounted stuff from my disty's including, lotions, small bags, pkts, aftercare, body wash, fresh ez,peepers etc.So i cram a bag full of stuff with my biz card attached. For ones that are directly located within my territory,I include a 10 base tan GC. Makes for a very nice auction gift and costs me $0 out of pocket. Almost always brings new clients in. Not to mention I have one wall dedicated to all my donation thank you letters from charitys, highschools etc..It makes a good impression on my customers |
