I Just Purchased a Tanning Salon -- NEED ADVICE

Hey Guys, New to this forum. I just purchased a tanning salon in Michigan. The salon is not doing the numbers that it has the potential to do, the previous owner wasn't present at all and had only one employee there at all times. I am looking for advice on what I need to do initially in this business to bring back clients that might have left or bring in new clients. I have an extensive background in business but it is my first time embarking on a tanning salon business. I know it takes a lot of hard work to succeed in this business, I also have a lot of extra space in my salon I would like to hear some ideas on what kind of other business ventures I can put into my salon. I am also wondering if anyone has any information on where I can get tanning lotions wholesale for, or if they know where I can get free samples for my salon. Thanks

Worse thing to add...very unpopular.

How much 'room' do you have? Tanning salons need to downsize to be successful, or have any hope of succeeding. Long gone are the 'multi-room' salon offerings. Need to cut back on overhead, so having more beds which won't get used is just throwing money away.

Adding 2-3 hair stylist could be beneficial, charge booth rental. Depending on location, demographics, you can charge $150-200 a week for rent...added bonus..stay away from 'nails'..the smell does not mix well with tanning...Circuit training equipment if space is there...convert more into a work-out than tan business..avoid paying 'tan-tax'

Re: I Just Purchased a Tanning Salon -- NEED ADVICE

Welcome to the industry and welcome to Tantalk!

Too many unknowns still to give you really solid advice.

That said - the "New to the Tanning Industry" forum would be a great place to start reading past posts! As you click on each forum there are "sticky" posts at the top that are often good sources of overall/important advice posts.

From there, you can also do a "search" on different topics - like "slow season specials" or "advertising ideas".

For example, this time of year, many salons will do a "Tan 'till the end of the year" special for a very low price for the base beds - just to drive traffic into the door. After they get there, the goal will be to "upgrade" them to better equipment - if you have it. So a Tan til the end of the year special that starts now might be for $49.99 or so --- about the price that an EFT for the same time frame might be. In fact, many salons will then attempt to get the customer to sign up for an EFT instead - "lock them in" even longer with you as a customer!
