Rep Power: 20 | Red Sox Wife on Tanning Bed Dangers I’ll start by saying I’m a diehard Red Sox fan… but I was so aggravated I had to write to my fellow salon owners to share this typical slanted tanning news story. Ok… Here’s a good way to aggravate a Tanning Salon Owner first thing in the morning. Kelli Pedroia, wife of Red Sox second baseman Dustin… was on the news (FOX25 Boston) this morning talking about the dangers of tanning. Now all the news teasers were… “The dangers of tanning beds and keeping your teens out of them”. So naturally I invested 45-minutes waiting through the multiple teasers and finally the story comes on and right away ticks me off. All the teasers were about “Dangers of Tanning Beds” They start with Kelli saying she was “sneaking” into Tanning Salons at age 14 when her sister was signing for her… and “that’s when it all started” She was diagnosed at 18 with Melanoma… after returning from a trip to the Cayman Islands. She says “We went away every spring break” and that particular year they went to the Cayman Islands and we “Fried ourselves”… “No sunscreen and we used oil”. After that she came home and noticed a weird mole and kept picking at it… so she went to the doctor and it was full Melanoma. She then goes on to say that right after her surgery she was “Outside” and “Laying by the pool in a full leg cast” (I wonder if she was still not using sunscreen and the same oil from the Islands???). After her diagnosis, many of her family and friends all went to get checked out and “She can’t tell how many had to get some stuff cut out”…. (Hmmmm, were they all victims of a tanning beds?) The news anchor then goes on to tell about how her Dermatologist says you should always take the time to put sunscreen on. So by this point I am steaming…. How many years has Kelli been away on trips and spent summers tanning in the sun, prior to her Melanoma? They don’t touch on that, but instead give the illusion that it all started with a tanning bed… BULL SHEET! Then… to really grind my gears… she goes on to say that; “they say” (I’m not sure you they is”)… but (they say), “if you go into a tanning bed prior to the age of 35, that you have a 75% chance of getting Melanoma” If you’re going to quote someone… Use Yogi Berra’s they are funnier… Like, “It's like deja-vu, all over again” or “They give you money, which is the same as cash”. And finally… they did a campaign pledge “You Skin Is In” contest with local High Schools to pledge that they would not partake in pre-tanning for prom season. The winning school got $5k, but they didn’t mention which school won. I’m guessing it was one of the several O’Callaghan or O’Malley schools since they have the unfair advantage… but I would still like to know how local tanning salons in that town did for revenue against that campaign. I am soooo sick of slanted news stories about tanning. As I was telling my wife, we provide a controlled tan per the equipment regulations. We had customers come tan at our salon, then go to another one (because we won’t let them tan twice in a day) and then they go outside on top of that to tan… I can’t prevent stupidity. OxyContin is a viable and strong pain medication when used by prescription yields relief for many people with moderate to heavy pain. However, when crushed, snorted or injected by a drug user…It’s a deadly drug. Is it OxyContin’s fault or the user? I hate when people point fingers at the tanning beds and salons… as I said in a previous blog, if someone decides to sue my business the co-defendant on the suit better be “The Sun” otherwise… case dismissed! Now I am going outside to work in the sun… its been raining here all weekend and I have yardwork to do… and for the record, I don’t use sunscreen in the yard. Enjoy the day! |

Rep Power: 35 | Re: Red Sox Wife on Tanning Bed Dangers Beachbum that is an annoying story. I find it helps to go to the websites where the stories were initiated and post comments. I always get more out of the comments sections then I do the articles themselves....no matter what it's about! So she was 14 and sneaking in on her sister's account. OK so if she was 14 and took her sisters drivers license and her parents ford escort then got killed 2 blocks from her home is it her parents fault? Is is her sister's fault? OH WAIT it must be Ford's fault, yeah that's it. OK now she's 16 and borrows her sisters over 21 license. She goes to a nightclub (she looks exactly like her sister) and she gets alcohol poisioning... who's fault is this? Maybe the parents should try raising the older child all over again and set some good examples themselves or accept the blame and don't sue the nightclub or Captain Morgan as the reason their daughter makes bad decisions!

Rep Power: 20 | Re: Red Sox Wife on Tanning Bed Dangers Yes... I'm in MA. I just hate when the try to scare everyone about the "tanning beds"... but yet they all tell stories about over exposure to the sun. Like that story I posted about the girl from Austriala (search: Tanning salon kills 26yo...) |
