Rep Power: 22 | Epiphany... I just realized something. Has any salon been sued for giving a client skin cancer? I mean if "tanning causes skin cancer" would there not be many law suits. We know big (and small) tobacco has been sued, successfully and not. I guess my point is that the derms like to place full blame on UV light. But there is no solid proof. I guess a counter point could be made by the ITA that IF tanning does cause cancer, why have there been no successful suits? Ahhh... need that thing called proof... Wheres gidget! :)

Most people with cancers of the skin are those who inherit the gene to develop skin cancer. Tanning does make those chances go up, BUT they come in here on their own free will and sign a contract. You could never tan in a tanning bed and still get skin cancer, you can get those from just working in your yard. My father is a farmer and he gets them all the time from years and years of being exposed to sunlight and he's never tanned in a tanning bed. He also gets them in places that have never been exposed to sunlight. So no I haven't but that doesn't mean that some crazy sue happy person wouldn't try it but just make sure you have all the legal paperwork. |

Rep Power: 0 | Re: Epiphany... Since people are exposed to all kind of natural causes (sun, smog, acid rain, etc.) it would be pretty hard to prove 100% that cancer came from the tanning salon. Contrary to cigarettes giving lung cancer where its easy to find out from the lungs what happended. I am sure that someone eventually might get the idea to sue the tanning salon but they better have a really good attorney. My husband has never sat outside in the sun, always wore a shirt or 300 SPF lotion! But he still managed to get skin cancer in his back. I am always in the sun, most to none protection except when I tan inside and have been thru cancer twice, nothing to do with skin cancer so go figure! |

Rep Power: 22 | Re: Epiphany... Thats the point, there is all this blame without proof. Logic says that damage to the skin would cause cancer. Whether it be a chemical burn or a severe sun burn. If you damage cells in a way that damages the RNA/DNA then it would seem this is where it stems from. As pointed out a million times, moderation and responsibility are key. But those "bad apples" that get cancer had those bad doctors who want to blame UV light when the cause was probably an early childhood burn or tanners who try to "burn the tan in" at the beach. Maybe I am just venting!
