Re: Dan Humiston Announces Run For U.S. Congress in 27th Congressional District

Dan has not posted on this site since 2001. Why should we believe he is going to be helping all of us and not just himself? He has time to go to the bbq's and such but for 7 years hasn't been able to come online and answer the many questions that people have asked him to answer? IMO it's an embarrasment that he needs an "online liason".

Movie King:

Fair comment, it is the ITA's postion not to post (I don't necessarily support that position either). Disclosure: MR International is a Member of the ITA and a supporter of the Berman Fund. I do meet with John Overstreet at least twice per year to get an ITA Update. I also encourage them to send out email's to Members (they now do this).

ETS does not post or communicate actively with online supporters, neither does JK, PC/UWE, Tan America, Mystic Tan, Magic Tan, Light Sources, Cosmedico, Voltarc, Hereasus, Tanning Trends, IST Magazine (Ribby once in a blue moon) or any dealer/distributor I know (other than John Hayes at URI) -- do you support any of them?

I think your making a mistake, but respect your anger!

You have 2 stores, he has 35, your interests are more aligned than you may think. Your interests are more aligned with Dan, than they may be with Brian Higgins. Nothing wrong with Brian, just not a Tanning Guy!

This is not about McCain, this is not about O'bama, it is about Tanning and protecting your customers right to tan!

Call me if you would like.

Re: Dan Humiston Announces Run For U.S. Congress in 27th Congressional District

Max,

With all due respected the 2 stores or 100 have nothing to do with the fact that Dan Humiston who is suppose to be the leader of the ITA never responded to a question here. If the case is that they do not respond openly he never responded privately either I know that because I and others have sent him Private Messages. People would message me and say they see him lurking but will not answer their questions or post.

Just on the store issue Moviking was up to about 35 Video Stores and a Video distribution and some other business. As for others you mentioned posting on line.

ETS/Helios

Tony Topher when the president of Helios would post on line.
Scott Bogdan Still does occasional
Bill Pipp does

Tan America
-Eric Wolll has been a liaison for them and has responded to several posts on the line sites.

Magic Tan
- Magic Tan has been represented on line by Veronique Munro and has shared her story with use about how she became part of Magic Tan and her own starting with Infinity Sun Systems.

PC Marketing
- They have posted on both boards. When someone asked for assistance they gladdy answered a question for someone

Heraus
- I'm pretty sure I recall Lyle Rhodes making a post on here. If not he is willing to talk to salon owners on the phone and is a great help. Because of this I would support Heraus.

ADI/Tmax- Has helped people tremdously on line.

I would love to see someone from the tanning community represent us in congress. I even wish Dan the best of luck. But the fact of the matter is that Dan never not "ONCE" responded to a question openly on this forum and if posting openly was an issue he could of just simply returned a Private Message to people from the on line community that had sent him one he never did.

Now he wants to do the first on line interview to collect donations for his run for congress?? What rules with the ITA exactly have changed for him to post on line?

Max I like you and think you have done a lot for the tanning Industry I liked your products when you were at Cal Tan I think Mr. International especially I bronze is one of the best products on the market I have openly posted that truthylly. I think you have helped many salon owners around the country and your tours you use to did help connect wtih salons owners.

Re: Dan Humiston Announces Run For U.S. Congress in 27th Congressional District

No anger Max. He is still a salon owner and could participate online as one if he chose. I understand The ITA not participating online as many companies have that policy.

Matt, it was only 14 stores that I had before I sold them to a national company. I wish it was 35...LOL

Re: Dan Humiston Announces Run For U.S. Congress in 27th Congressional District

I'll chime in here (surprise!! )

1. MANY don't post on-line -- in fact, most! Many who have, have felt "burnt" by it over the years - the behavior here CAN be less than "dignified" and the discourse less than fully professional. So I really don't think that should be held against Dan or anyone else. Most of us who DO post find it a little oddly "addicting" - and probably need a good 12-step program!

2. Dan has a 35 salon chain, is president of the ITA and travels around the country in that regard, has a young family, and maybe......a life. Possibly Tantalk just can't fit into the Top 10 priorities in all of that, ITA policy or otherwise -- seems fair.

3. I spoke to Dan about this during the last ITA Board meeting a few weeks ago. A few things he shared that lead to his interest in running for Congress:

a. If, for instance, a member of Congress calls the FDA or FTC about something -- they have to have someone return that call or visit them WITHIN 24 HOURS!! A LOT of pull in that!

b. If a junior state rep in some town gets a call from a U.S. Rep wanting to know why he is proposing a certain legislation (e.g. banning under 18 tanning in their state.....), they are VERY likely to take the call very quickly --- and may get an "education" that they wouldn't otherwise be open to hear!

c. It's "politics". That means, having an insider be able to make "personal relationships" that can't help but influence opinions -- even if it just means that person taking the time to sit down over coffee to hear your views and research things you share with them.

If you meet Dan, he is a very unassuming, salt-of-the-earth kind of guy. Not glitzy, not self-consumed. He could be "Joe Businessman" in any industry. He HAPPENS to have made his mark in Indoor Tanning, and I think he is as passionate about the industry -- for his OWN personal gain, but also, very honestly, for the gain of the industry as a whole --- as any.

To me, this is like the Berman Campaign. I can give a little -- a VERY little -- to someone else being willing to put in the "heavy lifting" in an attempt to help me out. If it works -- I get TREMENDOUS ROI on my very small contribution. If it falls short -- at least I tried, and can say I was part of attempting to move the industry forward!!

I will be making a contribution to Dan's campaign (sorry I didn't see this yesterday before the quarter end, but I'll be the first of the next quarter!) and encourage others to do the same - even a very small amount to signal "this guy has widespread support".

Re: Dan Humiston Announces Run For U.S. Congress in 27th Congressional District

MattA and the Tantalk.com Community Moderators and Supporters:

First of all, thank you for your feedback on "i" Bronze , it has done well all over the world. I also appreciate your acknowledgement of my personal participation in the online community. I have always valued and respected the input my old Company California Tan received from the onliners and I am very pleased with the number of new people I have met since I became more actively involved. Sunsally is right, online is not for the faint of heart -- but there is more good than bad that comes out of the feedback and friendships that one develops online.

Having said all that,

Based on the feedback that has been given, are you declining the opportunity to post your questions and would you like me to move on as regards setting up a future live interview?

My personal feeling, is that, online should look past what has happened and seize this opportunity to get one of our own into Congress. Simple, end of story.

I also have issues with some of the nuances of the ITA, the "silence". I take the time to meet with John Overstreet to find out what is going on. I sleep better each night after I do.

I am also planning to run for the ITA Board in the Allied (Lotion) sector. That is how strongly I believe in what they are doing. This, in an environment, when I really don't have a lot of spare time on my hands. Still a new Lotion company, European expansion in 2008/2009, launching H 10 O Sugar Free/Carb Free Vitamin Water. That is how convinced I am that they are doing good work.

Alright, I will ask the first few questions and you can chime in: (from my interview with Dan last week).

1) The Buffalo I grew up I thought was hard core Democratic, how can a Republican ever expect to win?

2) Tell me more about how you would plan to handle state issues with your fellow colleagues? (Tell me more about the required meetings with staff to staffers).

3) I did not know that the FDA and FTC report directly to Congress, what are the implications for us as professional tanning industry people?

4) Why is it that most Congressman do not know we are already regulated by the FDA (since they report to Congress) and what can you do to change that?

5) How much money does it take to run an effective campaign and how do those funds get invested?

6) If elected, how do you plan to stay in touch with the online Salon Owners?

If you are interested, please add your comments, questions and ideas.

This is not about McCain, this is not about O'Bama!

This is about the protecting the interests of the Professional Tanning Salon Owners, their Salon Associates and Clients!

Re: Dan Humiston Announces Run For U.S. Congress in 27th Congressional District

I have a couple:

1. If elected, what do you propose to do in congress to help alleviate the antitanning pressure from legislation and in the media?

2. What other congresspersons/senators do you know, or feel may be "friends of the cause" and will be willing and enthusiastic about pushing for changes in the status quo?

3. What else do you intend to do while a member of congress for your home district?

4. What do you think are the primary issues facing your prospective constituents today?

5. In your own words, give a brief, or long definition of civil service and what it means to you personally.

6. What is your personal stance on Roe v. Wade and what would you have done were the power yours to decide?

7. What is your professed religion and do you regularly attend services?

8. How many times have you been married?

9. What is your personal philosophy on public education and do you feel that every American should be entitled to advanced education?

10. What is your general sense of American health care today and what do you think is the best way for our country to care for its citizens?

11. What do you propose to do about the illegal immigrant population?

12. What do you propose to do about America's porous ports?

13. What do you think ought to be done to secure America's southern border?

14. What is your stance on civilian gun ownership and gun control?

15. How do you feel about the constitution and the amendments? Do you feel that they are still relevant to our culture today as they were originally written?

16. What would you do about Iran and the volatile conflict in the middle-east regarding Israel and her enemies?

17. Do you think taxes are sufficient today to handle the obligations of America's politicians?

18. What do you feel is more important: corporate health, or economic stability?

19. What do you think of Ken Lay, and what would you have done had you had the power?

20. If I said the most vile, most repugnant, most insulting thing about your dearest family member would you want to A)Kick the everlovin' **** out of me, or B)Take my donation and thank me for my vote?

There's my 20 questions for the candidate. Thanks for offering us the opportunity to supprt the campaign and learn more about the candidate. -Belvy

Max -

If Dan is going to respond to these, please recall this has been placed in an "Open Forum" and anyone Googling "Dan Humiston" will wander right in.

Not necessarily good or bad - just be aware.

Re: Dan Humiston Announces Run For U.S. Congress in 27th Congressional District

Sal, you must feel that it could be more "bad" than good that this is an open forum. I'm curious as to why you feel that way. Forgive me if I'm reading too much between the lines with regard to what you said. I think it is because "transparency" in a campaign can be a double-edged sword depending on what the candidate says - is that what you're thinking here? Would everybody, especially Max and Dan be more comfortable responding if we moved this to the IP? Let me know.
