i would like to have my own reality show so that i can show the world how owning and operating a tanning salon can make a person crazy. i think it could actually work. it could fall somewhere between "JOE DIRT"-for us ground uppers and somewhere around "GENE SIMONS FAMILY JEWELS" for the more seasoned and achieved salon owners.
nothing like "sunset beach", but a real live, boring, drawn out day by day aspect of what a typical salon owner has to do to try and keep their sanity and their salon(s) alive. how we live, sleep(or dont sleep), eat (or dont eat)-usually, all at the salon. keep realationships with our families and friends. how we constantly keep getting scrutinized by the media linking our beds to cancer. (there are some benefits to our beds.) How we have to manage our salon, clean it and clean the beds. maintain everything-the beds-acrylics-lamps-dusty, dirty fans/bathrooms/ceiling lites/carpet cleaning/furnace filters/bug bombs/setting sales/changing signs/making signs/backing up the computer!/order more towels that dont fall apart. making copies of sign in sheets and closing procedures/registration cards at staples cuz you dont have a copier/ relying on employees to do some of these things, CORRECTLY.
advertising/ no advertising?
your daughter who works for you is always talking to her boyfriend on the phone-your son who hates to work for you, whines about cleaning all the beds all the time and fights with his sister because she gets to run the computer and he doesnt. who gets to fold the towels this time!
ordering lamps with no money/paying bills and employees-sometimes with no money, while we go without. all these mundane things and more. trying to wait on customers at the same time and have conversations about their lives and listen to their stories about their kids or boyfriends or wives.when suddenly you get yet ANOTHER phone call in the middle of your conversation with your customer, from a lotion rep at"OC"! UGH! then suddenly, one customer out of the last 12 or so decides to buy something, a lotion or a package! a cup sample, anything. OOOOOhhhh happy day! just at that moment you get interrupted by another phone call from someone telling you about another great new lotion that you dont want right now because you cant afford to buy a case of 36! (what are they thinking! dont they know i am a new salon owner??i cant afford to risk that!)
then at the end of the day...you have just enough sales (could be worse could be better) to keep your spirits up and go for it - just 1 more day,1 more week, 1 more month....then here comes the busy season!!!!!!! oh i can make it till then....what do i need to do to get it ready for it and try NOT TO SPEND ANY MORE MONEY DOING IT! i can do it- i can make it work! but i need to buy lamps! you read every tanning mag that comes out and get geared up. stay positive, stay motivated-its freezing out, snowing, blowing and no one wants to go out of their house. except for Julie and maybe the Quinlans, who ALWAYS tan together. another month of this then it should be PRIME TIME! so you change all the lamps out-clean and shine all of the beds-you are exhausted. so, where is PRIME TIME? 'm ready. its coming- late. its here and its hustle bustle for about 12 weeks! and then suddenly, as slow as it came-it ends early! oh well- i was just about to go nuts keeping up with everything for the last few weeks anyway. tanners always coming in every nite 3 minutes before we close!
profit did you say? well maybe just enough to pay a piece of equipment off, if you are lucky maybe invest in a brand new state of the art bed that you cant live with out. come on now-lets be real-all of that profit needs to go into the bank -dont forget you have to pay sales tax on it. and you need to keep your little nest egg to get you thru the next 6 months of slow times! now doesnt that sound like it would make a great reality show???
