Rep Power: 28 | Parents Magazine http://www.parents.com/parents/quiz....0639281611.xml 4 outta 7 for me. One I got "Wrong": Question # 7. The best answer is:Don't seek out the sun and always use sunscreen; your child probably gets plenty of vitamin D from fortified milk and other foods. Using sunscreen stops vitamin D production in the skin, but most kids get plenty of vitamin D from fortified milk and other foods, says Sandra Marchese Johnson, MD, a dermatologist in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Even if that weren't the case, it takes only five to 10 minutes of unprotected sun exposure on a child's arms or face each day to produce all the vitamin D that her body needs, according to the AAD, and most kids get that much incidentally. Vitamin D deficiency, which can cause rickets and other health problems, is highest in African-Americans because the melanin that gives their skin its color blocks production of the vitamin. Talk to your doctor about vitamin supplements if your child has dark skin, doesn't drink milk or consume other vitamin D-fortified foods, or if you're concerned for any reason
