Hello,
I'm a "new kid on the block"... but I appreciate this site and the amount of information I have gained just from reading members' experiences and advice. My question is whether you guys think it would be a bad idea for me to provide a single portion cup of accelerator-bronzer and/or moisturizing lotion in each tanning room for my clients. I have seen one local athletic club provide this service, but very few tanning salons. My concept is a little more "upscale" and the rooms have mirrors with a vanity counter for after tanning face/hair touch-ups. I think this could be a nice little incentive. My idea is to buy a basic low-grade accelerator/bronzer lotion of some type in bulk and pump small portions into a small plastic cup w/ a lid. Do you feel this service will hurt my lotion sales, or clients will continue to desire the "better" lotions and pay for them. I also think this could assist me with discouraging the more cost-conscious clients from bringing in the "wal-mart" lotions without breaking my bank. Look forward to your thoughts!

PS- I am offering additional services and products to assist with my "slow season" and reduce so much of the dependency of lotion sales.

What lotion sales? You'll be giving it away in the rooms. And I wouldn't provide too much in each room that is going to keep them lingering in there and clients waiting in the recept. area. IMO

Interesting... cosmetic counters do it all the time... why don't you try it and let us know. People react big to the guilt complex, that is why salespeople like to use the "puppy dog close". Just get people to hold or take the puppy dog home for a night and they are hooked, could work with your lotion idea. I'd be curious to hear the outcome.

I wouldn't do it. if anything have a week that you 'sample' lotion in cups for them to try no lids, it makes you look like a rockstar and you will gain sales , if not bottles at least packettes.

I agree ^. I think having moisturizer in an area outside of the tanning rooms is a good idea. I do this and after they have tried the moisturizer , they like it, and bingo I sell them a bottle! To new customers, I always give them a sample of one of my more expensive lotions and 9 x out of 10 they buy a bottle............

I agree, you want your customer out of there as fast as possible especially if someone is waiting to use that bed.

How about a mini powder room where ladies can fix up their hair and make up after their tanning session with the free moisturizer in there.

As far as sample in every room no one will have to buy lotion again if they have it free each time. Unless you include the price of the lotion to the tanning price then your customer will have the impression they are getting free lotion but they will in fact pay for it so it might be good advertising.
