recycling lamps help

Looked and could only find old threads. I have boxes stocking up now because I have been quoted $3.75 per lamp recycling- where I drop off (50 miles one way). $50 more to collect a crate full. This is crazy.

I dont want to dump haz waste, I beleive in recycling for the health of the planet, but we need a break somewhere. Does anyone know anywhere better. EZ pack works out $3.90 a lamp.

Re: recycling lamps help

In most states, fluorescent and compact fluorescent light bulbs used at home can be disposed of in the same way as regular light bulbs. While all fluorescent bulbs contain a trace amount of mercury, the quantity is so minute that disposal is not regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards. However, if you are disposing many fluorescent lamps you should know that because they contain mercury they are classified as hazardous waste unless:
1. You, as the end-user, generate less than 100kg of hazardous waste per month (approx. 360 4' T12 lamps)
OR
2. The lamps pass the EPA Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) Test.
If the lamps meet these criteria and your state's regulation on TCLP is not stricter than the EPA's regulation, the lamps can be disposed in the same way as normal waste. However, if the lamps do not meet the criteria to be classified as normal waste, they will need to be either recycled by a lamp recycler or disposed under the hazardous waste guidelines of your state.

Re: recycling lamps help

a 10 bed salon would have to change out their lamps once a month to generate over 100kg of hazardous waste that often.

Re: recycling lamps help

I have contacted my town hall and recycling center and they both told me to throw them in the garbage. Problem I have is that my JERK OFF landlord always FLIPS OUT when lamps are in the dumb and threatens to charge me and blah blah. So now I have to hide them in the bottom of the dumpster, its bs

Re: recycling lamps help

Save the lamps up in the old boxes. get a few hundred together and send them to me in georgia. Let me know how many you have. I think it costs us about 55 cents per lamp. I can confirm when you let me know the quantity. shipping is normally only 100.00 or so. If that is the case then 300 lamps would cost about 80-90 cents each

Re: recycling lamps help

Check with your landfill also....our county landfill does a hazardous waste collection day every few months so people can bring in all those items that the county doesn't want dumped into the landfill. That is what we have always done with our lamps and its free....check neighboring counties if you have to as well. Someone, somewhere has to offer something like this that you could use. Good luck.
