Rep Power: 24 | We Survived It! Well, after being closed for 3 days because of the worst snow storm in Buffalo's history we didn't lose that much business. We were opened yesterday for the first time in a few days and the salon was packed! Some tanners still don't have electricity and today is the 6th day without! Luckily we got ours turned back on yesterday afternoon at home. The salon was without power just Friday, but we didn't want to take a chance with the lights flickering. This is the worst I have seen it here. We only got 2 feet of snow, but with the leaves still being on the trees, they couldn't handle it and down everything went. My father in law was driving in front of us on Thursday night after he got his heavy duty pick-up so he could put the plow on. A power line came right down on his truck and exploded. Thank god nothing happened to him, but it's been pure chaos here. It's a relief to see all the help we're getting from the neighboring states. All you see are caravans of electrical trucks from out of state. There have been 6 reported deaths so far, most from carbon monoxide posioning. People are putting their generators inside their homes for some stupid reason. We went to Home Depot Saturday for a chains saw chain. There were 500 people waiting in line for a generator to be trucked in. I have some pics and when I get home I will try to post them. Thanks for some of the PM's wondering if we're ok. We're surviving is all I can say.

Rep Power: 50 | Re: We Survived It! Glad all is well! I spoke with an associate who is in Buffalo on business this morning and he was telling me it is very eerie to see no snow left on the ground anywhere but all the trees and power lines down everywhere you look, he described it as it looks like a tornado came through and destroyed everything He had a meeting scheduled at a local Hotel for this evening and they had to move it 100 miles from where it was originally planned as they won't have power back for at least a couple days.

Rep Power: 24 | Re: We Survived It! I think the problem was that it wasn't well planned for. The weathermen called for 1-3 inches of wet snow (for you southern folk, that's snow that doesn't really stick to the ground, it dissolves). I think we got more lake effect snow because the lake is only at 64 degrees right now. It wasn't even below 32 when it started snowing. Plows didn't even get out on the roads until AFTER it all hit and they were getting stuck because it was so heavy. People were abandoning their cars in the middle of the streets, cars were flooded out down the road here. They are estimating that all power should be turned on by this weekend. Schools are closed all week here. It wasn't even a matter of the snow, because only 2 feet fell. It's the fact that branches and whole trees were taking out electrical lines. Lines are still falling. In fact a guy got killed over the weekend after a branch fell on him while he was cleaning up his yard. The city of Buffalo lost 50% of their trees alone. Thank god the National Guard is here today to help with cleanup.

Rep Power: 107 | Re: We Survived It! 6 Deaths Blamed on Freak Snow Storm Tuesday October 17, 2006 6:01 AM AP Photo NYDH603 By CAROLYN THOMPSON Associated Press Writer BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Four days after the record-setting snowstorm hit, nearly 200,000 homes and businesses remained without power, and a carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator was blamed for three deaths, officials said Monday. At least three other people died earlier in the storm, which dumped up to two feet of heavy snow on Buffalo and surrounding areas Thursday and Friday. Some community warming centers were filled to capacity Monday as about 195,000 remained in the dark, Mayor Byron Brown said. About 380,000 people originally lost power in the storm. Most schools canceled classes Monday, and several large districts announced they would remain closed all week. In Buffalo, 21 school buildings were without electricity, while other districts worried buses would be unable to get down blocked streets. National Grid spokesman Alberto Bianchetti said crews from 10 states and Canada were involved in the restoration effort, working in 12- to 16-hour shifts. ``This is certainly a storm and restoration effort that ranks among the most significant we've ever had,'' Bianchetti said. About 150 National Guard troops were activated to help clean up an estimated 10 million tons of debris in Erie County, and Buffalo police has extra patrols on the street while businesses remain closed. -------------------- Oh, that storm? Yikes. |
