Tanning History

History of the Suntan

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To bake it or fake it? Let history be the judge!

1558-1603
During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, women paint thin blue lines on their foreheads to make their skin look translucent; they whiten their faces with a lethal blend of carbonate and lead oxide.

Early 1920s
While on a yacht from Paris to Cannes, Coco Chanel acquires a suntan, which instantly becomes chic. She begins using tan models and mannequins.

1927
Jean Patou creates the first tanning oil. (It comes in a Baccarat flacon!) Two years later, he designs a bathing suit that’s cut “in such a fashion that not a fraction of possible tan is lost.”

1930s–1940s
Tans become stylish year-round, as pinups show skin and women enjoy more outdoor sports.

1960s-1970s
Everyone’s tan. Sun-worshipers use baby oil and Hawaiian Tropic.

1978
The SPF system is introduced.

1988
The American Academy of Dermatology concludes, “There is no safe way to tan.” Modeling agent extraordinaire Eileen Ford decrees, “The tanned look is dead.”

1990s
Today The fake-bake industry booms, but pale pretties like Nicole Kidman and model/novelist Sophie Dahl “fair” well.

Fun Fact: In 2004, a study suggested that tanning can be addictive: It stimulates endorphin production, resulting in a natural high!

Thanks for posting!

How do thin blue lines on the forehead make skin look transucent? Were they mimicing blood vessels?

yes - because during this time if you had a tan you were a servant or a field worker - white skin was the most desirable - the whiter - the better:sick:

Re: Tanning History

Then we have a lot of anciently desirable people walking around town. Every time I see one of the "pasty whites," I want to hand out our business card...

Now it seems the other way around... the people that have to work all the time are usually indoors, no vacations, too white. Leisure class gets to go down the shore, can afford to indoor tan....
