Local science student wants to place a Hot Dog in a 20 min. bed to see the results. Anyone else tried this.

MythBusters did the same thing with a raw chicken. Put it in a bed for 5, 20 minute sessions. Nothing happened.

he must have "tanning" confused with "microwaving".

Save him time and effort by doing the experiment under a regular lightbulb to see the same results.

I'd let them do it. It would be a good way to get to the high school demographic. Make a huge deal out of it! Get the school paper to cover the event. Do several experiments using different session lengths and various grades of equipment to demonstrate the different output levels of the equipment and how you, as a tanning professional, can determine the proper exposure lengths for different individuals. It could be an excellent opprtunity to score some easy PR and debunk some tanning myths at the same time. Talk to everyone that shows up about how the tanning process works and how your salon is a "market leader" in "Smart Tanning" practices that help your customers achieve their tanning wants and needs responsibly. You could even find a moment to work in some of the pro-tanning science that has been published lately. Good luck.
