Question How long has man lived on earth under the sun...

without sunscreen? applied sunscreen is relatively new, isn't it? why haven't we all gotten tons of skin cancer and all died from skin cancer yet?

Re: How long has man lived on earth under the sun...

and that's the scam. Sun screen doesn't prevent skin cancer. It MIGHT prevent burning if applied correctly which is 1oz every 2hrs which 99% of sunscreen users DO NOT DO.

Remember, you cannot make money saying the sun is good, but you can make HUGE money scaring people from something they can't avoid.

Amen. No money for the derms if people do not live their life in fear.

Re: How long has man lived on earth under the sun...

We all know that the sun is closer at the earths equator. If one listens to the derms, those people living there should be dropping like flies from skin cancer. But they're not. Look at the same relative geographical location of the U.S. in the southern hemisphere. If one listens to the derms, those people should have the same alleged rate of skin cancer as in the U.S. But they don't. Strange, it seems it's only a problem here and nowhere else. We all know the answer. It's all about money and the ability to pay them. If a country's citizens have the where for all to pay, the derms will set up shop. There's no organized derms in poor countries and so, their alleged skin cancer rates are low.

Re: How long has man lived on earth under the sun...

There are a few factors here. First, screwing up the ozone layer had a lot to do with it. Second, people are now transplanted all over the world from the areas where their ancestors lived. For example, you transplant Northern Europeans to Australia, you're going to have a lot of solar damage because they didn't involve the pigmentation to live in that part of the world.

Now, on the other hand, I read a very interesting medical study that African Americans are more inclined to get diseases like high blood pressure, heart disease, etc. Yet, according to this study, black people who worked in jobs that take them outside a lot, like construction, were less inclined to get these problems. While, traditionally, these problems have been blamed on genetics or cultural diet, they are also symptomatic of vitamin D deficiency.

This stands to reason. If your ancestors lived where the sun was intense, your skin is a natural UV filter. If you're transplanted to an area with less sun, vitamin D deficiency is a natural consequence.

The biggest problem is common logic flying out the window. If you burn yourself, you're hurting yourself. If you control your exposure, you're helping yourself. I can always remember my grandmother saying, "You need to get out in the sun more."

I agree, you need to get out in the sun. Here is an email I received about indoor tanning and vitamin D:
Hello, Kim --

Dr. Michael Holick at Boston University has published a study showing that tanning in indoor tanning units that emit UVB light (and 95 percent of equipment on the market today emits a combination of UVA and UVB similar to natural sunlight) will initiate vitamin D production in the skin.

Thanks for your question. In the coming months look for the Vitamin D Society's web page to have full answers to questions like yours.

Sincerely,

Joseph Levy, executive director
The Vitamin D Society
