Rep Power: 23 | After 18 years in the same location we have gone from the only tanning salon in town to seeing every Tom, ****, and Sally open in our area. Within a short walk there is a 6 or 7 bed salon in the small plaza that abuts ours, the family gym in our own plaza put in 9 beds a few years ago. In the strip center adjacent to ours the nail salon has a couple of beds and directly across the street a national franchise opened last year. A mile and a half down the road, you guessed it a nails and tanning salon. Continue down the road and make a left (we are now less than three miles from our front door) a hair salon has 9 beds upstairs and across the street from them a 9 or 10 bed licensed chain salon opened. Lake Mary boasts an upscale residential community. Primarily a suburban single family residential community, Lake Mary is a sought after location for young families and professionals. The resident population of the City is currently estimated at 13,792 and growing! It amazes me that people don't realize that this is not the fast food industry. Everyone has to eat so you can open a row of eateries. Out of the less than 14,000 locals there is a very small population of tanners. Divide them up between 8 salons and everyone loses. Who goes into an area thinking they can beat those odds? And there is a rumor that another salon is thinking of opening in a new strip mall 100 yards from the five salons that are less than 50 yards from us already. What gives? Let's divide the small group and devalue our product just to break even? This industry is out of control, it could be Armageddon. |

There is now something like 55 salons here and most are concentrated on the north side of town and it seems like theres another one every year. I don't know what these people are thinking, just to much money and not enough sense I guess. You would think they would do a little research and notice that they were trying to open in a overly saturated market. Oh well, were doing fine so it wont be long before they start dropping like flys. |

Rep Power: 57 | My guess is that most have not done a business plan on their own and most have no idea what a P&L is. Some have probably had the bed mfgr's do their business plans. Duh! conflict of interest. Demographics research? I doubt it since, if they did, they'd know before they started that a city with only 14,000 people CAN NOT support that many tanning salons and be profitable. |

Rep Power: 34 | Alot of the salons you mentioned Tan Talker where nails & hair salons, most tanners do not like to tan at those but a actual Tanning salon. I would not consider them much of competition if any at all. I don't know about the salons in Lake Mary, I do know Lake Mary and love it there it is a beautiful area. Lucky you to call that home. I opened in a heavy populated area as far as tanning goes. There are alot of salons here, but no upscale ones and certainly old as heck they are. I have never seen tanning salons in mobile homes until I moved here, the place wasn't hurting one bit for tanning salons but hurting something bad for a really nice new one. I don't imagine Lake Mary being that way at all. Everything there is so new and pretty. Who knows why'd they do that. |
