I think it depends on your demographics, your funds and what your competition has to offer.

You should check out what beds your competition has and go from there. It also depends on what you want to spend. You should also research the different types of equipment to see which ones you would be interested in. And if you can, try tanning in the different equipment.

ok thanks! the competition in the area is hollywood tans, tantopia and a couple other small salons. but these are at least 10 miles from where i am opening my salon. the hollywood and tantopia have mostly all stand up units. the smaller places have a mix of beds and 1 standup. which tanning supply is a good one to look into?

Absolutely avoid the last advice by WST.............I'm a new salon owner and the nearest salon to me is also 10 miles away. The price of gas nowadays, people don't want to drive that ten miles. I have 4 beds and I was told "why bother?". I am busy as can be and already have paid off two of the beds and only been open since May. I was able to raise my price a dollar with NO complaints. Getting ready to purchase a stand up unit and I'm going to stop with that for awhile. The competition (10 miles away) has already told me they are losing customers to my SMALL SALON because people don't want to drive it. I am busy and I don't have the huge electric bill they have. One competitor even admitted his overhead is high right now and losing business to me has hurt him. You will never know until you take the plunge. If you find you need more beds, purchase more. I started small, low overhead and it's really paying off. I have 1 base bed with facial and two medium and 1 high pressure bed. My high pressure bed (SolLux 36 bulb - 3 facial) is my most popular. If I had it to do again I would have skipped the base bed. Most people tanning know they want a high pressure bed. Put a beginner 'tanner' in a medium bed for less time will get the same result. Good luck .........it's been a real experience starting my salon and I've made some good choices and some bad but overall I'm actually making money. It's a scary venture. Sometimes you get good advice on this website, sometimes you don't. Take advantage of the advertisements attached to some of the members postings. I've found some of them very helpful and giving them some business.
