Not sure it was as bad as it could have been....at least they acknowledged that tanning makes you feel good. And they got a little blurb out about Vit D in the end too. At least in the article I just read on line...

Look, anything that is anti-UV on television or radio is detrimental to your livelihood; whether they come right out and say "tanning"/"tanning salon" or not. These are big business players increasing their profits at our expense. We could be big business too.

The report was not the one listed in the website, that one is dated july 2004. Last night's report explicitly compared people who tan to smokers...and likened tanning to have the same addicitive and detrimental qualities as smoking. Overall very negative press.

In regards to your topic:

Recently, several news outlets across the country have reported on a so-called study attempting to label indoor tanning as an “addiction.” It was reported that researchers from the University of Texas Dermatology Department asked 145 beachgoers, NOT indoor tanners, about their tanning habits. Questions were modified from surveys that are used to screen for alcohol abuse and other addictions.

As an indoor tanning training group, we must contest this “study” as nothing more than an absurd attempt by the studies authors at shaming people into not tanning. Interestingly, the study made no attempt at interviewing the nearly 30 million indoor tanners across the United States. We have found through legitimate surveys and interviews that millions of Americans tan indoors because they have made an educated choice to do so.

To assist salons in responding to the recent news reports calling tanning an "addiction," staff at ATI developed a one-page response to what we call "Bad Science." To receive a printable copy (JPEG) of our response, simply visit www.tanningprogram.com and request a copy of our letter. The letter can be handed out to your clients or posted in your salon. A copy of the letter is also being posted on www.tanningfacts.com.

We hope this helps!

Thank you,

Rick Mattoon

Until the tanning industry as a whole shells out some major shekels for lobbyists, national advertising, and lawyers to fight back we will all sit crying about such articles. Many of us have supported several groups financially that did do some minor skirmishing with good results, however a small group of salon owners who are willing to spend several thousand dollars to fight for the rest of the industry who wont even donate ten bucks can never succeed.

The key word to the success of a war with the Anti-Tanning faction is MONEY. If you don’t support some organization (with your money) that actively and aggressively responds with letters and lawsuits making them prove their allegations beyond a reasonable doubt then expect more bad press and FDA control of our already slowing industry.

Which reminds me I have to have the cosmic radiation shields fixed on my Star fighter before I enter Terrialian Space next week.
