Does anyony know any sources for market research on the tanning industry? Mainly national growth patterns over the last several years.

Thanks DWhite6872,

I've never had any luck accessing their site. One time they would only let me run demographics on the state of WY, when I tried today, the email they sent me didn't contain the password for their site. I'll try again tomorrow under the notion that there is something wrong with their site.

Population is one thing, also consider what that population is willing to spend. 2 million homeless don't spend much.......

Have you ever tried to count the homeless? Who does that? I'd look more at the unemployment, median income, and race figures in a market than the total poulation of homeless and those who don't live on the street. As far as tanning stats go, I've heard between 8-15% of the population (I don't know if that pop includes "everyone" or just 16-60 year olds) in the US admits to tanning indoors. I would guess those figures to be fairly accurate. Good luck.

Tommy, try here - same format - gut it lets you in!

The American Marketing Assn appears to have a pretty good free demographics web page.

http://www.marketingpower.com/content17051C5253.php

Sign up for free, then search "demographics" for the free service. It should come up as the top link.

It seems to have a lot of good information for potential salon owners as well as you guys that are expanding!

DWhite6872 Thanks,

I tried again and was able to get in to www.freedemographics.com, nothing special, just me being stupid, again. Still digging through the reports to see what is available/possible but seems like a good start.

LeaseHere,

I will try http://www.marketingpower.com/content17051C5253.php after I exhaust freedemographics.com.

Thanks for the help

I've exhausted the reports on freedemographics.com and looked at http://www.marketingpower.com/content17051C5253.php which after you sign in just points you back to freedemographics.com, oh well, worth the look.

After researching publications for tanning industry market research I think I'm settling in on research published by several tanning franchises in their UFOC’s suggesting that the tanning customer is:

Primary - 70% white female 18-39 from an average household income of 50K.
Secondary - 30% white male 18-39 from an average household income of 50K.

Can anyone add or detract from this market assumption?

freedemographics.com handles all but population by age segment nicely and I might be able to get that at www.census.gov through "FactFinder"?

I also interested in research on competition by area, maybe by SIC code?
Does anyone have suggestion here?

Is there something else I should be looking at?

Those assumptions are close.

Grip has more comprehensive demographic and psychographic info on the tanning industry than anyone anywhere. It's our job to know.

Our information is based, BTW not just on questionnaires polling salon owners (only partly accurate), but also on over 7,000 actual databases from salons (closer to the real truth).

What specifically do you want to know?
