I had a mother and daughter come into my salon yesterday. After registering, my wife noticed that the girl was only 14 years old. We told her that the state requires that she be 16 years old to tan. She then tells us that her and some of her friends have been tanning at two other salons in town. My question is: Being we abide by all the rules and regulations, should we report these salons to the state? The state health department will simply send them a letter saying " please don't do that anymore", thank you. Is it worth the effort?

Not unless otherwise stated by your state, they can tan at 14.
We had a problem with the underage tanning and we called our State Regs..and they said we could go as low as 14, but would not go under that age. We use to only take 16 and above. But the Regs do not state a age, just that anyone under 18 must have parental consent.

YES!!!! The bottom line is, this is why Tanning has a bad name, because of a** munch greedy salon owners that have no respect for the industry and care for thier clients!!!

No. There will always be people out there breaking the rules, and how do you know these kids are telling the truth? At least you know you are doing the right thing!

Our regs. state, very clearly, that NO ONE under the age of 16 may tan even with a parents signed permissiom.

I believe the girl is telling the truth because her mother also stated, at the same time, that her daughter and friends were tanning.

IF it is in your regs then by all means report it..but I was stating our regs do not state that.
An age...we even called about it, to make sure.

I have several 14 & 15 year olds that tan here with thier parents, I also have a few parents that buy thier daughters & son's Month unlimited tanning if they keep thier grades up. I let them tan because the law here is if they are under 18 they must have parents consent, I do demand that the parents be present EVERY time they renew thier package. But I am NOT going to tell a parent what they should allow thier children to do. If the parent deems it ok, who are we to tell them what they should allow thier child to do and not to do?

Ok I was rereading your post and if it is against your state laws then of course you should not let them and yes I would report it! Report it enough and I bet they would get more then a letter. If your state does inspections, then when they inspect the other salon they will know what to look for.
