Rep Power: 21 | If You Get This E-Mail, Delete It ASAP! If you get an e-mail claiming that Osama bin Laden has been captured, do not open it. It's a virus. The BBC News reports that the junk e-mail claims to contain photos of bin Laden's arrest, but if you fall for it and download the attachment that purportedly contains the photos, your computer will become infected with a Microsoft Windows Psyme Trojan virus. Several versions of the message are being circulated, but all of them contain the same false information about bin Laden's arrest. They also all claim that CNN and the BBC News will soon be reporting the arrest and showing more photographs. While one version said the photos in the attachment were copied from a military television channel, another directs the reader to a Web site that features videos of the capture. IT Week reports that one of the versions contains this message: "Turn on your TV. Osama Bin Laden has been captured. While CNN has no pictures at this point of time, the military channel (PPV) released some pictures. I managed to capture a couple of these pictures off my TV. I've attached a slideshow containing all the pictures I managed to capture." The virus subject line could be any one of the following: God Bless America! God Bless! Captured Captured! Finally! Finally! Finally! Captured! He has been captured God Bless the USA! Users of almost any version of Windows, including 2000, 95, 98, ME, NT, XP and Windows Server 2003, are vulnerable. Once it is downloaded, the virus will copy itself onto the PC and then send a message to a Web site confirming the infection, notes IT Week. This is the third virus to use bin Laden's name as a ruse to get people to download the attachment. |
