Had a client call today wanted to know if tanning affects pace makers. Said her Dr. told her not to tan, but the nurse told her that in all the pace makers across the county that had been put in, only one patient had an adverse reaction while using a tanning bed. They were not able to say that the tanning unit was the cause, but since have put in a preventative clause regarding tanning after having a pace maker put in. This client loves to tan, and wanted to know the risks involved. I was unable to answer her question, this is one I had never had before. Wanted to take it to the pros to see if anyone would be able to help with this.....Does anyone know any facts regarding tanning & pace makers?

Well, unless you're tanning people with a microwave oven, I don't really see a problem...

Of course, you always want to avoid excessive heat...

I think it goes back to the UV only penetrating skin deep, am I right? Who wants to weigh in?

Well, my father is on his second pace maker and the only thing I can think of that he can't do is weld. I know he has no problems with microwaves, but why risk it? See about giving them a mystic or air brush tan.

It was the old one's that would have problems near microwaves.

Can you go to tanning beds with pacemakers?
Answer: Yes. Tanning beds will not interfere with your pacemaker.

I would imagine you would want to stay cool. I have also heard that a couple beds should be avoided. But I would also check with another Doc just to double check.

I wouldn't put anyone in for full time in case of overheating.

Pacemakers have changed over the years, we're not talking about getting a pace maker too close to a microwave anymore.
Plus the beds have changed over the years, and I suspect the bulbs are better, but the beds themselves may be delivering MORE energy than before because of all the bells, whistles and gadgits all over them, including the AC units, the aromatherapy units, the stereo CD stacking and CD changing units....
Safety first! If in doubt, the answer is NO.
