Rep Power: 20 | Ok, 3 kids aprox. 13-14 years old walk in to my salon. "I want to tan" they say. I was like "do you have a parent" and they say "no" What do I do, I gave them all a consent to take home, and then I let them in. I said that they can't come in again unless the fourms are signed with a valid phone number. But if they wernt allowed and their parents found out I let them in, I dont want to get in trouble!!!! Should I deny tanning to anyone under 16!!! Or should I go soft and let them in with a fourm. HELP! |

Rep Power: 25 | Two issues: 1. Are there any gov't regulations regarding age? 2. How eager are you to be sued or hassled? As a general rule, you don't want to take the risk of mad parents storming your salon saying you burnt little Johnny or Janie (especially with most research indicating it is a bad burn prior to age 18 that is the best link (although still weak) to future skin cancer issues). NO tan until they have the form signed. Best to have it signed in your presence, but marginally ok (but risky) if they bring it in signed and you confirm with a phone call. If you have ANY questions about the signature or the phone call, say no and make them do it in person. The few $$ from a tan isn't worth the wrath of a parent looking to shut you down in my opinion! |

Rep Power: 22 | Is there an FDA reg on what age you can tan? TV station called today and wanted to talk about teen tanning. The very same station who last year did random searches to swab beds after cleaning. I let them film some video and i knew they were going to test beds at random locations. The tested 8 different locations. The reporter told me they found nothing and she was dissappointed. Of course you were - no story now. They then put a doctor on TV and he said on all 8 swabs they found (then used the medical term for dead skin the term escapes me) and he found that very disturbing. Oh look dead skin just fell of my arm i cant see it but i know it happened. Dead skin is dust you leave it everywhere. I can swab anything and find dead skin. I gave the reporter an earful and said i wouldnt talk to them on a bet. Now im afraid they will send in teen tanners to see what happens. Sixteen is already our cutoff and we choose how long they go on every visit. If your kid is tanning your going to notice. You cant hide it - its not sex. I should know this but i am in a unreg state. Is there an FDA rule and where can i see it in print. I know one of you now. Mods where you at? Isnt this the kind of thing your suppose to do once a week or somwthing. Neon im not asking you to take a canopy off just provide from info. Lets go - i need to know. Ill be back in like 7 hours. Also a parent signing a consent form for a minor dont mean squat. Might as well use the paper to wipe my as - i mean nose. |
