I just started tanning again after about a year off. I went to my tanning salon today and got in a standard bed for 17 minutes (gradually working myself back up to the full 20 minutes). Today is my fourth time tanning since I started last week. I haven’t been in a bed since Monday. However, today I fried my a** off and I can’t figure out why. So, I’ve got a hypothetical question. My lats, lower back, a** and middle legs were tomato red when I got out of the bed. I am only red on the skin that was touching the bottom of the bed. When I was tanning, I felt like I was burning. I haven’t felt that sensation since about a year and a half ago when I was using hot action, tingler lotions.

So my question is as follows… What if the last person using the bed was using a tingler and the salon didn’t clean the bed well enough? Would my skin have absorbed reaming lotion from the last person to use the bed? I ask because the whole drive home I felt burnt beyond belief, but by the time I got home and looked at my back in the mirror the red has subsided to a light pink. My chest and face appear to have the look of getting mild sun, but nothing major. Now, I’m just trying to figure out why I fried so bad when I was tanning today. Was it due to just getting back into tanning and possibly new bulbs in the bed, or is it possible that my skin absorbed some of the last person’s lotion and caused my skin to “tingle” and turn red.

If your just starting back tanning 17 min. sounds like alot for the first time back. Depending on your skin type. I would suggest starting at 10 min or lower and working your way up to 20 min. It is possible that someone used a tingle before u and that the bed may of not been cleaned properly. Explain what happened to the salon where u go and see what they say.

Where's the gradual part? Try starting at 10min. You burnt the *** off yourself chum.

Well, like I said. This was my fourth time tanning since I started back last week. On Monday I was in for 15 minutes and was nowhere near red when I got out of the bed. Half way through tanning when I was inside the bed I felt like I was burning, which is not normal to me. My skin is almost back to normal... So, I'm really thinking the last person must have been using a tingler and the salon must have not cleaned the bed well enough.

Yes Req, it sounds like you were having a reaction to tingle lotion not properly cleaned off the beds. The lotion can get into tiny pores/cracks/etc in the acrylics and then it rises up again when the beds heat up on the next use. I would bring it to someone's attention in the salon so they can take more care in cleaning the beds. It may not seem like a big deal to someone that can handle the tingle factor, but to a new tanner, or to someone with sensitive skin, it is a huge deal...plus it brings sanitation to question as well....
