Blockbuster and Tanning - tanTALK

I use to work at Paramount and I still have a couple of friends who work at Viacom/CBS and they are hearing Blockbuster is coming out with a "youth" concept.
Since they are loosing store traffic due to the net they are creating "youth retail" services.
They told me they are thinking of putting tanning beds / video/ internet / large screen Tv's and you can play video games as well. They will have competitions and tournaments for the video games, they are trying to make it a place were all of the young people could hang out and get tan!
I guess they need to try something until there leases run out!

I heard that Block Buster owned Palm Beach Tanning. Any truth to this?

I think Mystic tan does. But I think they will still be classed as a video store....so they could just add beds even if there was another salon in the strip center.

In the past I would have exclusives that kept someone else from doing the same thing I did if that was their "primary business". The grocery store or dollar store could still sell movies because that was not their primary business.

I know for sure of one blockbuster franchisee that also has tanning. They do 10.99 per month unlimited.

well if this is the case make sure you get exclusive with your lanlord for your leases, otherwise you are screwed..

You have a service "tanning" or in the above case a pharmacy means you can prevent your landlord from allowing in a business with a similar service if you have a good contract. I don’t know what would happen if someone already 'in' wanted to add in a competing service.

If you have an exclusive you can prevent them from adding another such service. However you will pay more in rent with an exclusive. A smart lanlord will not add two such services to see two people paying the rent compete. It has nothing to do with wiht if you have a good contract. It's if you have an exclusive in your contract or not.
