Rep Power: 21 | Yesterday I asked a question about tanning salon professionals and Sunsally gave one of the best definitions of a professional tanning salon. If all salons can follow her lead what an impact it could make for this industry. The following is a quote form Sunsally…. Kay asked: What to tell people to look for that might better help indicate a "professional" salon and/or questions to ask before you tan? Well - besides certifications (which is required in some states, not in others): -When you walk in - is it clean? REALLY clean? Floors, corners of the rooms and behind the doors, walls free of lotion spills, etc. If all THOSE surfaces are clean, you can bet the beds/eyewear/towels etc have likely been appropriately sanitized/cleaned as well. -When you indicate you are new to the salon - what do they do? Do they tour you around to see the equipment and ask questions to see what is the best fit for YOUR needs - or slap you in a "one-size-fits-all" package right away? -Do they have a skin typing form that they have you fill out and they then use to determine your appropriate tanning time? Do they point out the list of sun sensitive medications and mske sure you aren't taking any? If you try to "talk them up" for more time than they suggest, do they hold their ground and explain why they chose that amount as safe for you on a first visit, or give in and let YOU dictate safety in their salon? -Ask questions about their equipment - differences between the different levels (if they have them), information about the differences in UVB and UVA in each, etc (don't necessarily need to know exact specifics, but some general knowledge at least is necessary), how often they change their bulbs, how frequently they would "recommend" you go on each level, etc While better salons may ALLOW daily tanning, better salons, in my opinion, recommend every other day (maximum) as plenty. -Finally - I would ask about their policies regarding under 18 tanning, pregnant women, eye wear use, etc. Better salons, in my opinion, require under 18 to have parental consent (including asking for any restricitions on frequency), tell pregnant women that while the concern is typically heat (and that it won't "radiate" the baby or anything crazy like that!), they should check with their physician for their particular situation (oh - and recommend the bed that will give off the least "heat"). Eye wear should be non-negotiable - letting them know that the eyelid has no melanin, and is much too thin to protect the eye from significant damage without the use of goggles. Those would be a good start to weed out the better salons, in my opinion. |
