After-Tanning Odor -- What Causes It? - tanTALK

A woman expressed to me that she was freaked out by the smell of her skin after tanning and thought that it might be a sign that she is doing something bad to her skin. She said she never noticed the smell when tanning outdoors. I tried to assure her that this wasn't the case but, to be honest, I couldn't remember what the exact explanation was for the smell. I know it can be eliminated with lotion and all that. I tried searching different forums here but couldn't find an answer. I am smart-tan certified, and I do remember reading something on this, but just can't remember. Can anybody help me on this one?

It could be a lotion that she is using or it may be the result of the chemical reaction created by the tanning process. Harmless.

Another good reason why she should use lotion. Vitamins for the skin.

Is she using a bronzer? I always recommend a lotion with no bronzer to these people. A lot of times it's the smell of DHA that they really don't like.

Some lotion also have the ability to counteract after-tan odours.

Some people think a good lotion is a substitute for a shower...not true.

I know that Cal Tans Beach Bum Rum has an ingredient added to it to help alleviate the "after-tan-odor" I don"t think that it really works, but it could help with the sale of the lotion.

Don't even tell your client about any "bacteria"!! It is all part of the tanning process, chemically. Nothing to worry about!!
