Rep Power: 0 | More fluff..... SunTimes.com Will it never end? What you don't know about tanning beds January 18, 2005 BY DELIA O'HARA Staff Reporter Teenage girls are well-represented among the 30 million Americans who will soak up the artificial sunlight at the nation's indoor tanning salons this year. But they may not hear about the dangers of indoor tanning -- even if they ask all the right questions, according to the February issue of Consumer Reports. Indoor tanning has been linked with increased risk of skin cancer and can prematurely age the skin. But employees at nearly 35 percent of 296 tanning salons surveyed by the independent, nonprofit Consumer Reports denied that indoor tanning can cause skin cancer, or that it speeds up the skin's aging, or both. In addition, 75 percent of employees said it would be fine if women tanned every day -- even though the reporters had identified themselves as beginning tanners, for whom the federal Food and Drug Administration recommends no more than three visits in the first week. Though many people know that lying out in the sun is bad for the skin, the tanning industry has promoted -- and actually stated in some cases -- that indoor tanning is safer that sunlight. Consumers may not realize that several studies have showed an even higher rate of melanoma among people who tan indoors. The CR study found that 6 percent of responding tanning parlor employees advised prospective customers that they could tan without protective eyewear required by federal regulations, a practice that can damage the cornea or retina, and may eventually cause cataracts. "Overall, in our six-question survey, the employees gave an average of three to four answers that we consider false, questionable or inadequate. Only 1 percent answered all questions appropriately." |
