I have seen/heard of lotion, body jewelry, smoothies, teeth whitening, swim suits, etc...as retail items that do well in tanning salons. Which retail items are the best sellers and which have the best profit margin?

Lotion: Designer Skin and John Abate. These two not only have a great resale value, but they both have great results to the tanners and they smell good in the bottle and even hours later.

Body jewelry does do well for us. There are a lot of people out there these days with belly buttons, eye brows and noses pierced and they are forever looking for another place to buy more stuff and at a better price. As for where to buy: we have access to several wholesale stores in our area with great prices. You can also get a lot of this stuff from your lotion distributor.

Swim suits do ok. They are expensive to buy even wholesale. You can get pre-packs from Venus and Tan Thru, but they will be a year or two old and you get little to no choice as to what comes in them

A salon I know of has started carrying silver jewelry, purses, cute flip flops, clothes etc... and they are doing great with some things and really bad with others - try to stay away from clothes so much. Silver is popular now and women who don't even tan will come look if you advertise.

You will just have to try things a little at a time and see how it goes. Make your initial investment small just in case what you are trying is a flop, then think of people you can give the stuff to as Christmas presents!

Teeth whitening is big craze these days too. I however have not gotten a whole lot of info on it to pass on to you..........somebody else here knows, I'm sure.

I am associated with 2 salons. One sells items at twice what they had to pay for them.......including lotions, and the other sells for 45% above what the book says is wholesale or salon cost. Try to stay below what is called "retail", because your customers will figure it out eventually and appericate it, but it also keeps you competative.

At any rate........use your best judgement and good luck!

smike, I know thousands of tanning salons that are making more profit/money on teeth whitening systems then they are lotions. One salon owner who only owns 1 salon sold 100 kits in 1 week and made $3,100.00 in profit.
Let me repeat Three Thousand & One Hundred Dollars pure profit in 1 week of sales. The POS on this product is sooooo Easy. They buy it pop in their mouth before they get in the bed and come out w/ whither teeth and darker skin. Plus the contrast of whiter teeth against darker skin at the same time is such a great reflection on the quality of your salon. Believe it or not back in the day some salons owners didn't offer Tanning Lotions because they thought it was a Gimmick. This is a true statement. Can you imagine a tanning salon not offering lotion? So I guess my point is that just like lotions teeth whitening systems are here to stay and are no Gimmick. Any salon that is not offering this service is losing tons of money!

Neon Beach, I love being called out on this product. The reason your dentist doesn't do that many in one week is because he/she charges between $250.00 and in some cases as much as $800.00 for this service. I hope that answers that question. Not a whole lot people can afford to go the dentist and pay that much. Can your customers? Second answer: Neon have you ever sold over a 100 bottles of lotion in a week in peak season or the start of season? I hope you have or you're in the wrong business. Same difference as with teeth whiteners. During peak season when we are seeing between 100 and 300 customers a day and introducing a new product that works so GREAT and has such a BUZZ around it, it is simple to sell in a 7 day week between 10 and 20 kits a day until your base is saturated with kits then you sell them gel refills when they need them adding even more to your bottom line. As far as success stories I have a list of numerous salons that sold 100's of kits out of the box when they first introduced this service. For a list of just a "FEW" salons and a testimonial from just 1 salon mentioned in the above example go to http://www.hwemd.com and click on Showcased Salons. Teeth Whiteners for tanning salons allow you "the salon owner" to generate more revenue out of every tanning session you sell while giving your customers a service they are all ready spending their money on some other place. Remember it's your expensive equipment that makes this product work better then any other retail teeth whitener available today. It has everything to do with indoor tanning because we are utilizing the heat and UV your units put out to tan our skin and whiten our teeth at the same time. This is such a simple product and such a simple concept. That, Neon Sun is why the dentist you mentioned above are getting FAT on the same procedure you could be offering your customers at a fraction of the cost. If your not offering this service now, you have lost HUGE in potential profits and will have to one day offer teeth whitening systems for tanning salons in order to stay competitive. Neon one last thing. Your right about mist on tan, worse tan I ever had. Long live TRUE TANNING!!!!

Selling indoor tanning products is the biggest and best retail item. The rest depend on your area and customer base. Some things work and do not work depending on your area and customers. Try different things that do not require much investment or commitment as a test first.

Hank van,

Just like Pure Tan equipment and products "that you have promoted in your past posts" teeth whiteners for tanning salons is not for everyone. You are a perfect example. The fact that we have a 85% re-order rate on teeth whiteners speaks volumes on the legitimacy of this product. Numbers don't lie. In all your past posts it seems that you have had many bad experiences with other products, manufacturers and companys. As far as knowing of at least one chain of salons on our list that doesn't do well with HOLLYWOOD WHITES we are investigating your allegation. I PM'd you in regards to this and am anxiously awaiting your reply. My question to you is, "what possible motive could we have to include a chain of salons on our web site that isn't having success with our product"? That just doesn't make good business sense. Wouldn't you agree?

You also stated in some of your past posts that you felt Pure Tan beds were better then Tan America beds. We disagree. I feel that Tan America units are the best in the industry and far out perform Pure Tan units. But this is just my opinion based on past experience. My point is "everyone has an opinion and that's what makes this forum such a wonderful place". What works for you might not work for someone else.

Keeping with the original subject of this thread, "Best selling retail items for my salon", I would think that an 85% reorder rate on a product that has had Huge success in thousands of salons across North America and Europe would be worth looking into. Hollywood Whites teeth whiteners has a 100% satisifation money back guarantee. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. You Hank van are unfortuanley one of that 15% that couldn't sell this product perhaps it is the make up of your client base or you just didn't promote the product correctly, regardless. It is the other 85% success rate that really matters in this thread. 85% successs rate on any product in the tanning business is MAJOR and the potential for a, "best selling retail item", that is designed to work with your tanning units can not be ignored by smart tanning salon owners.
