Upon an inspection from the Kansas State Board Of Cosmetology we learnt an interesting fact. A salon down the street from us was recently violated for using non compatable bulbs in their beds. 10 min exposure time running for 20 minutes. They have been sighted on many, many other violations as well. The board has not renewed their license for this year. The salon is still open. It seems that salons that violate the rules and regulations are subject to a fine and have as long as Dec 31 of the violation year to comply and have their license renewed. On many occasions I have had many students walk in my door and seek my advise on what to do for a bad burn that they received from tanning in this particular salon. They are allowing their customers to tan for the first time for the full exposure time. Students are flocking to this salon for a cheep student month special not knowing what they are tanning in. Staff is not certified and there are no warning signs posted in the salon. I am not salon bashing but I am appaled by the fact that salons that don't care what they are doing to their customers skin are allowed to remain open! Salons such as this are sending the wrong message to the public about tanning salons. This looks bad on all of us! If a salon in Kansas is visited by the Board and sighted with a violation it is like being bit by a tiger with no teeth! I called the main Board office and asked what could be done to change these rules. They advised me to contact as many salons as possible and have them write letters to there area representatives to ask to have these laws changed and give the Board the ability to close non compling salons down! Need anyones help if you are in Kansas. Please write those letters and let our voice be heard! We are contacting several local papers (public, school and private) to see if we can run an article to inform the public on how to avoid salons such as this. Our job is to inform our customers on proper tanning not harmful tanning! Thanks for all your help!
