| In the years past I used to put on my shrink hat in in the slower months. Thank goodness that era is about over for most salons in our industry. Every year, I would suggest to my clients to do an activity schedule for the whole year. For the simple reason: ACTIVITY CREATES BUSINESS, no activity, no business. In the slow season like September I would suggest for them to sit down and do a monthly plan for the next year, primarily relating to marketing and keeping the tap running. The reason is two fold. Activity keeps your spirits up, and if you do a plan, one year from now, you can look at your past year and learn from your mistakes and triumphs. This puts you into a position to better your business for the upcoming year. You can look at one promotion and say "that worked great" lets do it again, and another and say "that wasn't so great" let's try this instead.
Another thing that is accomplished, you always have a plan. So when it gets busy, you already have a plan for the month. You simply look at the plan and already know what you are doing.
The big thing is, once you do this, year after year your activity plan gets better and better, because you have it in writing.
I have literally talked to men and women with tears running down there face in the months of September and October, because of the obvious, no money!!! I used to say get active, make a plan, and go out in the street and dance like a wild person and at least people will ask what you are doing. You can say "I am trying to sell a tan". That used to always get a lot of laughter.
