I was wondering about sales by percentage. Wanted to know where other people were at. For the last 3 years lotion has made up for 13% of my total sales.

Lotion sales at one salon accounts for 13.8% revenue and our other salon is 27.2% of revenue. Those numbers seem to be consistent again for the beginning part of this year again too.

27% please tell me how to do that. The salon before I got there had a higher %, but they gave away alot of tanning with a purchase. I am no willing to do that. They would give away like 5 ultra visits with a $30 purchase. My boss would do a flip if I could get it up to 27%. Pointers are welcome.

You have to actually use the lotion, as well as like it, in order to sell it properly.
How many times has a customer asked you what kind of lotion do you use/like? Or they ask what will get them really dark? TELL THEM WHATEVER YOU WANT, because in the customers mind, you the worker know a lot more than the average tanner. Also,
you have to push samples constantly, get everyone talking about the new lotions, and
how nice they smell, how dark they get you, and how it reduces burn etc... Put lotions on display right in front of where people look, and it helps to have fun packaging!!
****, packaging is 50% of the sale !! I reccommend D.S. This is only my opinion, but we are selling about $800 per month worth of lotion in a small 6 unit salon.

Most salons make the mistake of putting lotions behind the counter. We keeps ours out were the client can touch them. We did have to lock them up last year, but if someone is standing in front of the cabinet we are on it...we ask if they would like for us to open it and we do..we tell our clients to open them, smell them and if they ask what works well we tell them they all will, but from experience we have found if they like the smell they will like the way it tans. They will also, ask what we use and we are more than happy to share with them our likes and dislikes, but I still tell them, just because it tans me well doesnt mean they will like it by the smell. We all have individual taste, so this accounts for alot of our sells. We sell lotion everyday and if a new client comes in, 8 out of 10 we will sell package, lotion, moisturizer and goggles. That extra 5 to 10 minutes spent with them, helps make the sales.

It's just the opposite at our salons. The salon that has the lotion behind the counter is the one generating the 27% revenue and the one that has the lotion out from behind the counter is doing 13%. As a matter of fact, my wife and I were just discussing the idea that could be ONE of the reasons why we are not selling as much lotion as her salon...because it's not right behind the counter. Another reason for the difference are the clients themselves. We've noticed that a large percentage of her clients ask more questions about lotions and are ready to purchase vs. my clients who are very relunctant to listen to the reasons why lotion is important, never ask questions, etc....I feel we almost have to tie them down to a chair for them to listen to us at my salon. Not sure how to combat that either, BUT we're working on it! LOL

Hey I'm still appaulding you both. I've told other people in the biz how much we do $$$$$$ in a year, and thier always shocked and impressed. I thought we were doing really well. We are a large salon (30 beds - getting two spray tanners) and so we have alot of traffic. I read someone on here say that people inflant thier numbers. I havn't, but I thought that percentages would be a better way to compare our progress. I have some work to do (and as much as I hate emporium -hehe) yall are selling alot of lotion. Great job!
We have the lotion behind the counter (can't always be upfront) used to have a hugh theft problem. Employess and customers (before I got there)probably to the tune of $10,000 a year. You ever have an employee take in the money for the lotion and not ring it up.
Sunlounge I know what you mean. We have cheap beds and we have expinsive beds. We have very diverse clients. Some people are not in the position to buy lotion, no matter if it help or not. Your area could be a very good reason. We get alot of highschool kids. They don't buy lotion - they got $30 - $35 for the package and that is it.

We are in somewhat of a rut right now. Our sales were $74.44 yesterday. Our sales were $585.00 on Tuesday! All of this rollercoaster stuff is getting a little old. I can't wait for it to get busy in here! Our location has a lot to do with our minimal traffic, the terrible parking allocation for our salon (the two parking spots in front of the salon are "15 minute parking" designated FOR THE DRY CLEANERS NEXT DOOR! WTF!
As far as lotion goes, our clients are very very stubborn about buying lotions! Most of our clientele is older scrappy *** women (but we're in the higher class part of town) which is totally surprising, you'd think they'd be all over charging their husbands credit card FULL of lotions and expensive tanning sessions! Hehe
