V7 (the first Windows version) and V8 used an Activation Key .... this was a software key that was typing into the system. It changes every time on a different machine, so the activation key that is used on one system will not be the valid activation key on another machine ... or even the same machine if Helios was reinstalled. Helios have the Software Program to provide an activation key for V8 but I do not believe then often provide support on software than old.

With V9 the dongle (Hardware Copy Protection Key) attaches to the Parallel port of the computer. Anyone that has upgraded to V10 had to return there V9 dongle within 30 days or they would be charged $895. So although they may have the V9 CD they will not have an extra dongle.

On another issue, I am sure you really do not want to be guilty of "pirating software" for your business. Do the right thing and contact Helios. They may also be able to help you update your data to a current version if that is of interest to you. Not sure on that one though ... wow ... V4 impressive.

Andy, I am talking about a program that was sold as "Breeze" by a Scandinavian gentleman whose name was Lars, (I think). Long after that the programs became the property of Helios and some Doctor or other was the proprietor. We have never upgraded simply because what we have has done everything we need. No bells and whistles but the essentials were there and gave us the control on clients and packages that we needed.

Have just checked with my daughter and have been informed that the version on the computer was indeed 3 point something and I am confusing an upgrade diskette with the original installed version. She does not remember anything about any penalty associated with upgrading and at one time she says she was offered version 7 of Helios (?) and refused because the price couldn't be justified.

Have no intention of "pirating" anything. But the prices being quoted for the latest versiona are in my honest opinion outrageous for a one-salon owner with part-time staff. If Helios wish to join this thread and offer me a very old version at a reasonable price I will probably accept it.

I doubt very much if Helios would be interested in supplying an older version of their program. They do not support outdated versions so that would be illogical.

You will wait a long time for Helios to respond on a board ... ETS the owners of Helios forbid employees from posting on Internet sites.

Give them a call if you wish to discuss this ... 888-936-5160 ... press 5 for sales.

If Ib may wind up the discussion I am sure that a lot of salon owners who have used various versions of Breeze and Helios over the past 10 years or so, will agree with me that vey little "support" has ever been needed. If Helios are justifying the cost of their products on the "after sales support" they provide that is their prerogative but I am willing to take any of their products with (apart from an initial guarantee that the thing will work as claimed) no obligation on their part to further support their product. Any older versions of their program which they have not detroyed could surely be sold on this basis without any harm to them or their customers.

Anyway thanks for the opportunity to share my concerns and for your attempts to offer solutions to our problem.

Sincerely

Dncanny

The cost of the monthly Software Maintenance Agreement relates to a client receiving ongoing program updates for Helios, when a client has the SMA in force they also receive telephone tech support during normal business hours. I sound like a Helios sales rep here, that could not be further from the truth ... but thems the fact.

I can offer no comment on Breeze, or what you are referring to as Breeze because I am not sure which product that would have been that was available 10 years ago.

For the record, and willing to be corrected. Related to Helios, the License fees previously paid and the SMA fees currently paid do not give the user the right to "sell" your copy of Helios. The License agreement (which I am sure everyone read when installing software) provides the User with an Non-Transferrable (without Helios permission), Non-Exclusive right to use the Software in a single location.

You are asking to purchase something that no one but Helios and their duly authorized agents have the right to sell you, so give Helios a call if you wish to persue this matter. All the best.
